Hundreds of years in the future, and they don't already have, or can't quickly build, some robot to run in there and fix the doodad in the glowy column?

And Spock, the logical thing would have been to send Ensign Redshirt in there to fix it. That's what they're there for. :p

I don't see why Star Trek is so popular... I saw an episode once and got bored after 15 minutes.
