Split screen software - wide screen

One of my aquaintences bought a 30" screen but wants to split his in half - like two monitors - I thought I read something about software for that but now I can't find anything. It is using a mid grade ATI card if that has any bearing on the topic.

Thanks - I just gave GridVista a try I think it might work better with Acers - I have a very very fast PC with a pretty good video card and it was very slow on my system. Also it takes some configuration. I think tile windows horizontally built within Windows is a little faster and easier for his needs. I don't want to have to help him out much so my goal would be a program that makes your monitor really really act like two screens so that he open any program when it is turned on and it will go to half the screen and he could drag it over and when the program is turned off it will go full screen.

I realize he probably would be better off with two full sized screens I have to find out for him what his options are.
