Split plate fee!!

Budmantom

Lifer
We went out to eat the other day and I wasn't that hungry so me and my wife decided to split the meal and the waitress said you know we have a "split plate fee".

It's not that I am cheap(frugal perhaps) but man just the thought of pay extra and receiving nothing just kills me.

What do you guys think?

Sharing fees have always annoyed me, but often the $2-4 it costs still makes it cheaper to share an entree with the fiancee instead of ordering 2 entrees and she eats hardly any of hers (she eats like a bird!)

I usually never volunteer information on sharing. She'll order the appetizer/salad, I'll order the entree. We never mention how they will be consumed 😉

Did they actually bring it out on two plates or did you split it yourself? This is not unheard of. Why not just order something, eat a little, and take the rest home. Now you have at least one more meal, maybe two, very cost effective. 🙂

Assuming you're only taking up one seat, using one plate, one set of cutlery, one glass for your beverage and one napkin, I agree that the split plate fee is ridiculous.

It depends... if it was a place with big portions I could understand(like chinese). If you went to Applebee's and did that though... it would seriously piss me offf.

LoL

Why they charge a fee:

A meal comes with bread, salad, and service.
The split plate fee tends to cover the extra bread and salad.
There is still two people that must be taken care of and pleased.

If you just took it home, there's no extra work or materials on thier part.

Yeah they did split it up, normally they just give you an extra plate. Normally I will just get what ever and take the rest to work (no cafeteria), but this was on a friday and we have plenty of leftovers in the fridge.

The charge was minimal so to me it wasn't how much, it was that this was the first time I incurred this charge. I thought it was strange.

recently i had the same thing happen to me...me and the gf went out to a chinese food place...decided to just get one big entree and asked if they could bring an extra plate...they did...i get the bill...they charged an extra 50 cents for the plate....no extra food...i had to do the "splitting" myself...just a plate...so that kinda erked me...i could understand charging a fee if they provided something more than just a plate but really now...thats just being greedy i think...

I bet this was a nicer place? The fee was 'cause they split it, not usually how the dinner is served.

Yeah, that would tick me off. Usually entrees at a Chinese place are massive.

Actually it wasn't, it was rather modest.

50 cents is pretty light. In fact that's reasonable. The plate still has to be carried, bussed, washed, etc. It's not like it was truly free on their part.

Although at every Chinese restaurant I've been to, it's "Family Style" where everyone shares all the food....
