Split mobo S/PDIF out.

After looking for a long time & paying too much for it I obtained an ASUS S/PDIF-Optical backplate. It has 3 internal connectors (S/PDIF-GND/+5V). On the mobo (M2N-VM DVI) the same connection exists. This is currently sending digital audio to my amplifier.
I purchased a Point of view 9600GT (DVI/HDMI) graphics card which is running quite well.
On the graphics card there are 2 connectors (S/PDIF-GND) that feed the audio stream to the HDMI port.
I have (previously) put an RCA splitter on the S/PDIF physical output which worked.
Here's the question (maybe silly);
Can I split GND-S/PDIF to go to both the backplate & graphics card?
The +5V will not be split.

Appreciate the assistance,
Martin

I did what I said I would do & split the GND/SPDIF to both the backplate & the Point of view 9600 GT 1Gb card. Audio via backplate works like it always had & there's still no audio coming through via the HDMI connection. When I plug the cable v/v (reverse) to the graphics card the audio via the backplate also stops. (I'm guessing SPDIF > GND = 0 / like 1*0=0)
