Does anyone else feel like this game is a huge disappointment? I've barely even started the game, and I've already noticed tons of problems:

* Misspellings and horrible grammatical problems in the various texts you pick up.
* An annoying popping sound every few seconds. Does anyone have a solution to this? I have a Sound Blaster 5.1 with the latest drivers...
* Blocky shadows with my 9700 Pro.
* Shaky AI.
* Awkward controls.

I feel cheated. The first Splinter Cell was one of the coolest games I've ever played. This one has just been a disappointment from the get go. I was so looking forward to this game! And now I just want to cry...

It's a good thing I have Far Cry installed! Best ... single player game ... ever!

What are these popping sounds you speak of?

I know the first game had a really nasty sound glitch that caused the game to be unplayable unless non sound blaster drivers were installed on some machines.

Some of the ambient sounds "pop" every so often. It's just that the quality of the sound is poor. I'm running with the sound level set to "High". I tried turning off hardware acceleration, but that didn't help. I also thought it might be the music, but I turned that off and still heard the sound.

It's just kind of annoying... :disgust:

What fixed it in SC1 for me...
I download Sound Blaster drivers by a group called kX Project. They are unoffical drivers designed for recording and studio work.

You can download them here:

Try it out and see it it works. But as I said.. this fixed the sound issues in Splinter Cell 1. Havent tried 2 yet.

I have just finished up the game myself and think its a very good game, but for some reason I think the first game is superior. I never had that popping sound, but I can assure you that the "blocky" shadow business is not just on radeon cards (I have a 9800). It seems the shadows are like that in all hardware (and the xbox too). You could always increased the resolution which helps a bit, but yea.. those blocky shadows are nasty.

As for the controls.. well..its identical to the first so I have no complaints as I got used to it. The AI can be a bit wacky when it comes to you sneaking around.. sometimes you make NO SOUND and they still catch you...weird.

The game is also way too easy and short, in fact, its shorter than the first.

Still a very good game, but maybe you may want to wait till it gets cheaper.

I wouldnt go so far as saying its a HUGE disappointment. There are some issues I have with the game, some you mentioned:

- Didnt even notice the misspellings
- I don't get the annoying pops (drop the SB :)
- The blocky shadows have annoyed me from the get-go....but, you know what....after beating Farcry...every game has graphical problems :)
- AI seems fine to me.....nothing special though.
- Controls are fine and customizable.

I thought the original splinter cell sucked, and PT holds no interest for me. Too slow and plodding; yes, I'm aware that it's the point of the game, but metal gear solid sucked for the same reason. My idea of fun is not waiting in the shadows for a guard to wander by so I can ambush him.

i noticed the misspellings too, but they're always in the data sticks you pick up - which are usually internal memo's between mercs. just seems typos in the messages themselves, that were don't intentionally by the developers to add to the realism of the game. bad guys don't always have the best grammer, you know. as for the other problems, i can't really say because i picked up the xbox version.

Fortunately, the more I've played Splinter Cell: PT, the less irritated I have become with the game. I haven't finished it yet, but so far it is shaping up to be a decent successor to the first game.

I guess it just doesn't have the "wow, take a look at that" factor that the first one had. Oh well. I've certainly played much worse! :)

Had to force myself to finish the first one. It was too linear and the klunky controls/interface access bothered me. They fix any of these issues?

For what it's worth, I get the popping sounds as well with my Soundstorm audio. I'm not sure what's causing it (I don't overclock the PCI bus, as someone above suggested), but it is annoying.

I agree that the game isn't nearly as creative as the first one was. I'm not too far into it, but I'm hoping it gets better.

It is worth the price for multiplayer alone, singleplayer is just a bonus in my opinion.

I haven't bought the second one yet, but am planning to. I really liked the first one. :)

One question: I don't get any "popping sounds" in the first one, but I DO lose the sound effects. I.E. the background music, voices over the OPSAT and sound effects liek gunfire and explosions disappear. The only way to fix it is to shut down the game and restart it.

I'm using the onboard NF2 sound with the latest 3.13 unified driver. Does this problem happen in the second S.S. too? :(

Old thread, but what the hey.

I'm getting popping using Soundstorm as well; have tried many different driver versions. Has a fix or workaround been found?
