Splinter Cell for PC only does 640x480?

A friend of mine says that SC only works at 640x480 if you have a 32MB video card. Is that true?

Damn, I have been saving my money for a new power supply, nF2 mobo, XP2100+, 512MB PC2700, and now I have to buy a new video card, too? These games are killing me!

Runs beautifully on my $199 Xbox ;)

It would probably run OK on my PC too (AthlonXp 1800, 1280mb, GF4 ti4200) but I'm not buying it twice ;)

It's a bit testy at 1024x768 on the rig in my signature when heat-sensor mode is active. I've taken it to 1600x1200 with 4x AA for screenshots. I think if I put a 9700 Pro into my system that might actually be minimally playable.

Do you still have those screenies? If so can you host them? Just curious what it would look like at that res.

From a reply I received at the Ubi Soft Splinter Cell Forum:

SC-PC doesn't use a single DX9 graphic feature. There are 3 distinct driver
paths in SC-PC:

-GF3/4Ti ---> Shadow buffer algorithm, light beam intersection, detail
texturing, reflection, pixel shaders 1.1, DX8.NV API (~xbox)
-Radeon 8500/9700 ---> Shadow projector algorithm, detail texturing,
reflection, DX8.1 API, pixel shaders 1.1
-GF2/4MX, Radeon 7500 ---> Shadow projector algorithm, no pixel shader,
almost no reflection, register combiners

With 32 MB cards, you are limited to 640x480 resolution and shadow
resolution is limited to Medium as is shadow details and effects quality.
With 64 MB cards, you are limited to 1280x1024 resolution and shadow
resolution is limited to Medium
With 128+ MB cards, you can go up to 1600x1200 and have shadow resolution to
High.

So if the game does not use any DX9 features, why to they recommend it in
the readme?

===============

Notice the line that says 32MB limited to 640x480?

It's a game, what do you expect? I want a game to look good, not run on old hardware (despite the fact that I have an older video card :()

Were you able to get AA working with it? I have heard AA is disabled for this game.

Deleted them, but I'll re-take some tomorrow morning. In such a shadowy game it's hard to find moments for good screenies. Right now I have a midterm tomorrow morning which I'm taking a break from studying for, so... :p

I guess that explains it. I'm running a GF4 Ti4200 w/128MB of DDR.

I played a tiny bit at 2x AA and Quincunx AA at 1024x768, it definitely worked - especially considering I noticed the slowdown and turned it off after a while. :p 4x AA I gathered worked because it was even more hellacious on performance; I really didn't notice a difference in image quality. Are you guys using the 1.1 patch for the game? Maybe that addresses the issue...
