ho boy

Splinter Cell Conviction has been taken "back to the drawing board" by Ubisoft Montreal.

That's according to a report in the latest Xbox World 360 mag. Though Ubisoft isn't saying anything, the mag says it's heard that the surprising development decision has forced Splinter Cell back into the festive period of 2009 - or as late as Spring 2010.

Conviction has been in development for some years now, surfacing early last year with combat involving dynamic scenery and crowd stealth gameplay that focused on mixing in with the public in Washington DC - a bit like Assassin's.

According to XBW, it's likely that the decision was made after Conviction was outdated by more recent gaming developments - most notably Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed.

Ubisoft's UbiDays event is due to take place in Paris next week, so hopefully we'll get an official word then.

Well, that could end up being disappointing yet good if ends up being a fantastic game. But I can't think of any games that were taken 'back to the drawing board' and ended up coming out good...

Wow. I wonder if what they were working on just turned out to be complete garbage and they knew it. Better than trying to push out a turd that no one is going to play I suppose.

I tried the Double Agent demo a few days ago, and quit playing it immediately. It looked rather dated. Like the article says: it's eclipsed by Ubi's own Assassin's Creed (kickass game, btw). I like the SC series (though it's had a dropped ball or two), so I hope when they do release Conviction, it's up to par with the market.

Chaos Theory is awesome (pc version) but Double Agent took a step back in my opinion. I'm a big Splinter Cell fan and was hoping this new free roaming sequel would turn out well but I guess they saw what other games were doing they had to do it all over again. Not a big deal if they have something more ambitious in mind. Maybe they'll use the excellent looking engine that powers Assassins Creed.

I LOVE all the SC even Pandora Tomorrow. I just love the voice acting and story lines.

I'm also a huge hitman fan.

I'm upset since I loved the new SC footage. Owell.

I really hope they don't ruin it by making it more like Ass Creed.

What a god awful game; I can't wait for AC:2, 3,4,5,6,7,8,1100.

It was flawed in some ways, but still quite good. I rented it, and I'm glad I rented rather than buying. But I certainly don't regret renting it or putting the time into finishing it.
