Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

I never played any of the splinter cell games and chaos theory seems to get good review and its cheap ($10).

Should i play this one first and is the multiplayer any good? Is it still active?

It's an outstanding game in every way, with the exception of its usage of Starforce. That can be cracked easily, however.

I never played the spies vs. mercenaries part of the multiplayer, but the co-op campaign is great and almost as long as the main singleplayer one.

It's ok. I got it for $10 last year and I never played a Splinter Cell game before (except 5 minutes of the first demo).

The major complaint I have is that it is too easy to just kill everyone in a level and run freely. I don't recall any enemy "respawns" so you'll have to discipline yourself into not using the hightech weaponry and easy kills.

I gave multiplayer a pass. Also, you do have to consider Starforce. I had to download an uninstaller to get rid of it after I uninstalled the game itself.

I played:

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (great)
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (awesome)
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent (meh)

I seem to recall that many missions didn't let you kill anyone on the higher difficulties. I have generally gone through the game killing only three or four enemies in total, mainly due to the fact that they all have something interesting to say to you, so it's worth grabbing them.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (great)
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (awesome)
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent (meh)

That sums it up well.

I actually really liked Double Agent.

Its interesting how much better a game is depending on which dev team did it

SC1 - Ubisoft Montreal (GREAT game)
SC2 - Ubisoft Shanghai (meh, Voices weren't even in different languages + story line had no correspondence to original)
SC3 - Ubsioft Montreal (again, AMAZING! I was a little disappointed in its length however, I think it's story followed SC1)
SC4 - Ubisoft Shanghai (horrible.. still have not finished it)

Chaos Theory is a great game. The two before it were great as well. Double agent - not so much. I eventually got through it but it took me forever because i'd get bored with it and quit for long periods of time.

But yeah, thumbs up for Chaos Theory, especially for $10.

On the PC or the consoles?

The problem with the PC version is not so much the game's content, but its horrendous degree of instability that makes it borderline unplayable. You need to have a lot of patience with bugs to even complete the game.

i bought double agent for $2.70 when circuit city was having a pc games blowout a few months back. are there patches to fix the stability issues that it had?? i played pandora tomorrow and really liked it so i had high hopes for it but i do remember people complaining about the game here.

Another vote for Chaos Theory. It's easily the best in the series. Having a mission score system encourages you to go back and try for perfect score which requires no kills on most levels.

Chaos Theory was the most polished one of the series. That's because Montreal had the time to perfect their formula introduced with the first game.
Pandora Tommorrow's story was completely forgettable and the game not as polished.
Double Agent's story was fine, but the whole thing felt like a beta version from a playing mechanics standpoint.

It's really like this: Montreal invented Splinter Cell and made great games, Shanghai not so much.
