this is a pretty cool feature in one of the later levels of the game. an office building has walls made out of a special type of glass that can be toggled clear/opaque with a switch. you can even watch a video presentation about how they work in-game. I would assume that these are real, anyone have more info on them?

Shouldn't be that difficult, some kind of liquid between glass panels that responds to electric currents?

I believe they are basically LCDs. I saw one on display at the Franklin Institute a couple years ago and I'm surprised they haven't become more prevalent in real life...

Mmmm, yes they're real, but I don't have any info off the top of my head. Very popular for "hip" joints to use in their bathroom doors (entrance, not stalls)

Pray to god there isn't a wiring problem

yes, they are real LCDs are based on the same kind of principle. You have a backlight and you use electric currents to change the optical properties of a filter in front of it to produce colours. Obviously LCDs have to be much more sophisticated than just light/dark but as far as I know it's just a light polarization trick

yeah, discovery showed them being used as stall doors in some club, it was on one of those top 10 shows like 2 years ago.

cool. in the game your gun has an electrical discharge attachment so you can trigger the walls remotely, it's fun to play around with.

Yeah, I was at a club once (not sure if the same one as mentioned a couple posts up) where the stall doors are see through until you go in and lock the door. It freaks people out at first

The Ferrari Superamerica has it in it's glass roof too. And Raynor was right, except that there's no need for a backlight in these...the crystals are adjusted by the electrical impulses, which rotate them to a certain angle, thus letting more/less light through.

They're really expensive. Who wants to spend 10 grand on a single window when you could do the whole house and window treatments for that much?

But that's the surprising part. LCD technology has gotten a lot cheaper, but it seems like this particular application has never really taken off enough to drive the price down.

yeah 3M have this technology for a long time, I think their patents expired already, so tells you how old this thing is. they had to discontinue it, because not enough demand out there.
