The driveway becomes a skating rink at night in this hellish temperature even after repeated shovelling. So if i mix antifreeze and salt into a solution and splash it to cover the drive way, will it prevent ice from forming?

Never leave antifreeze on the ground. Children and dogs love the stuff and it is extremely toxic. Just treat it with rock salt and sand.

if you want to wake up to a yard full of dead animals!
antifreeze is like candy to animals, not to mention throwing in some salt for good measure.
just use rocksalt and forget the antifreeze

Don't listen to these folks, they have never tasted antifreeze themselves.

All antifreeze is not toxic, Ethylene glycol, the most common type of antifreeze is toxic to animals, there is No Tox antifreeze and RV plumbing antifreeze which you can drink outright with no harmful effects.

It tastes sweet to dogs, not sure about kids. My car popped a hose at work one night, we spent a long time washing down the area then pushing the water to a drain area with push brooms to make sure there were no standing puddles of antifreeze in case a dog came by.

Just use some "ice melter" product or rock salt.

Please don't dump anti-freeze on the ground.

This is true, but he probably wouldn't have specifically gone out and gotten the non-tox stuff.

Eh, to me it doesn't seem like a good idea. Throwing WATER on your driveway to prevent icing? Just use rock salt.

It's supposedly sweet, like syrup. But it'll kill you.
I'll be damned, you learn something new every day. I'm talking about the sweet part as I had a pretty good idea that antifreeze was not good for you.

Listen up nimrod. Just go to the hardware/grocery/whatever and buy rock salt. It is specifically packaged to go on your driveway.

Don't mix it with water. Just go buy a bag of rock salt and put it down by itself.

iirc, antifreeze will harm concrete.

i dont know all that much about concrete, but my dad used to help pour it when he was younger, and my uncle owns a concrete finishing company, so yea.

Another thing you could do is see if you can buy calcium chloride pellets instead of rock salt. IIRC, a lot of those "ice melter" products use calcium chloride because rock salt fails to be effective under -20 F while calcium chloride works up to like -40 F. It's much safer than antifreeze and I don't think it's that much more expensive than rock salt.

Do NOT use rock salt or any other salt as it will eat holes in the concrete. Use Ice Melt only.

I have a different problem We are building a new home on a slab. Bathrooms are sloped to a floor drain. To protect the P traps I have filled them with RV antifreeze and capped accordingly. The water is pooling in the bathroom areas. Worried about the PVC pipes being damaged by the freezing water. Engineer friend said to use Potassium Acetate but none available locally., I have some RV antifreeze but worried it may damage the newly poured concrete.
Anyone know about this?
