You know, now that I'm looking at it THAT isn't even right on either check (Well, the second bill is close I guess). Should be 9% if I recall.

maybe the waiter changed the amounts because most people calculate tips based on the tax.

Check is a US term for the final bill for the meal.

That's odd. What do they use as a term for an actual cheque? (way to receive money)

The US is not the only country on the planet where a "checkmark"motion with your hand is clearly understood to be a request for the check, or bill.

Why would a restaurant give you a check? Was there an error and they had to pay you back money or something? Normally they could just do a refund through the debit system.
