Spirit Airlines? Have you been experienced?

So the airline I use to fly to my Christmas destination non-stop has ceased doing so and the only airline I can find that will is Spirit Airlines. I understand it's a budget airline but do any of you have any experience with them, suggestions, other then don't fly Spirit? I want to save my seat in advance and I can't find a way to do so on any of the search cites.

I would never fly Spirit just based off what I have heard. I only know 1 person with experience with them, and it was bad. They were flying from Vegas a day before us so they headed off to the airport. Only to get to the airport and the flight was straight up canceled for an unknown reason and they were never told about it. They had no other flights going out that day since it was later in the afternoon, and they had to get back by the next day to pick up their daughter. They ended up getting some expensive Southwest flight and Spirit wouldn't do anything other than refund them the $150 leg of the flight that had been canceled.

Fuck that noise.

While I prefer direct big time, I would take a layover if my only other option was Spirit. I'd pay more too.

The seats are hard, there's no legroom, bags are extra, drinks are extra, paper tickets are extra, reserved seats are extra. Their on time arrival is about the worst in the industry 23% (but that's relative to the best being around 15%, SW is 21%). Overbooking compensation is around 5 per 10,000 pax, which is in the middle.

I've flown them a few times, and each time I have regretted it for one reason or another. The worst part is probably the quality of other passengers due to the mistaken belief that Spirit is the cheapest option, but after all fees that's often not the case. Basically, it's a flying bus that will probably get you there, but you won't be singing any Christmas songs. I wouldn't go as far as saying I would definitely book a connecting flight, but I would be generous with my price and time trade-offs.

make sure you aware of all of their fees....printing ticket at the airport fee (print at home), carry on fee (cheaper to check in luggage - not sure if this is still the case), etc....

When booking flights for work travel, I get a warning message from our booking tool stating that I didn't pick the cheapest flight which is usually Spirit (but it only factors the ticket price and not the fees)....One of the days, I am just going to reply with 'I didn't choose Spirit because they suck'....

All the above. It's a bus. It's cheap IF you don't get any add-on's.
My daughter flies to/from college, like for Thanksgiving, with Spirit but she only has one small carry-on handbag. She's young enough to enjoy the frequent passenger excitement and tight accommodations for the 2 hour flight.

I survived RyanAir. I felt bad for those flight attendants. They were SO busy upselling everything.

They made a PSA and sold lottery tickets (LOL wtf)
Then they sold perfumes.
The ENTIRE overhead cabin was covered with ads.

All of this on top of their busy existing duties of any airlines.

Spirit I hear is a same budget airline. I wouldn't mind using them if I weren't married with kids. Can't take any risks of inconvenience or issues with the kids.

Keep in mind I never actually dealt with Spirit.

I took Spirit once from Denver to Ft Lauderdale. At 6’4”, I literally did not fit in the seat. I had my leg/knees propped up the entire miserable flight. Everything about the experience sucked. Will never ride Spirit again. I may give Frontier a go since Denver is their HQ, but I have a feeling I will hate them just as much.

Never flown Spirit. But my dad used them a lot to fly from MSP to South Florida. At one point he had 28 dollar round trip tickets. No way to beat that imo.

Flew frontier. Both flights were delayed by about 3 ish hours. On the departing flight, they had us in the cabin for about 2 of those 3.5 hours. They said sorry, gave us a drink voucher for one free drink.

Nope, never again. Even my wife, who insisted on frontier after I told her it was a bad idea, was like "okay, some things I had to learn the hard way...".

My flights with Spirit haven't been terrible per say, just not luxurious. I've heard horror stories of flight being delayed hours or simply being cancelled, but have not personally experienced this. Is it comfortable? Nah. Is it cheap as hell? Generally, if you know what to/not to do. Do they have those awesome little Buzz Ball Moscow Mules for purchase? You bet your sweet ass they do.

I haven't flown Spirit (or Frontier) yet but am curious. I'm sure I'll end up regretting the decision.

I flew Frontier this year and it wasn't bad. I thought they were better than United. It was direct coast to coast flight and I didn't pay for any upgrades. If given a choice of flying a major carrier and having one stop vs direct flight with Frontier, I would choose Frontier every time. I value direct flight over pretty much anything. I don't understand people's love for spending time at the airports and their love of flying and spending time inside the plane. I just want to get on and get off. The less time I spend at the airport and inside the plane, the better.

I've flown them before albeit not for very long flights. Be sure you include all of the fees when comparing ticket prices, their ticket price is basically just for your seat on the plane and NOTHING else. Other than that, flying just plain sucks now no matter who you fly with if you don't spend an arm and a leg for an upgraded seat, they just suck slightly more. If it was either them or some long ass layover or if I could save a decent amount flying with them I'd go with them personally.

If I didn't really care if I got to my destination and the Big Front Seat was cheap I might but I've not run into a situation where I didn't care if I got to my destination or not yet

Nothing wrong with spirit if you follow their rules. I flew coast to coast and my co worker flew American and I was in spirit. She took off first but I arrived 1 hour earlier. The bad reviews is worst than the experience. No different than a name brand airline
