You can definitely be arrested for taking money you found on the street, just like you can be arrested for taking a car you found on the street.

This is akin to an open register...oh, but that money isn't worth it?
Right... so what amount is worth it to sacrifice your life?

I'd argue there is no value worth that. Not unless I somehow had the means to escape with it. Would I even know how to do that? I'd need a list of counties without extradition... and a means to get there. Would I even want to live in them? No guarantee they'd let you keep anything, or wouldn't sell you out anyway.

I'm not really seeing the value in making such a sacrifice.

Is there an option for calling 911: "I found 5 pounds of money on the street" and then forgetting to turn it in? "My dog spent 2 pounds of it." Apparently, that's legal. 😛

I wouldn't take it.

Authorities said 29 people have voluntarily handed over the money resulting in HK$5.7 million being returned.

Wow converted to USD, that's an avg of $25k per person taken and returned.

You'd have to be pretty ballsy to take that much and keep it. If I found $100 on the street that's a different story.

hell yes, there's no way they'll catch me. AND it was in the street, so the rules say its morally ok to take it.

yeah...I think that, IF it wasn't outright ILLEGAL to keep it...I'd keep it.

If it WAS illegal to keep it...I'd probably turn in a portion of it. MAYBE. (especially if there was video evidence.)

It's not what a man does when others are looking, it's what a man does when no one is looking that defines him.

I was taught if something isn't yours, it isn't yours to take. If you find something of value, you make a good faith effort to find out who owns it.

Jedi, if it is as easy for you to openly steal as you have said above, then you will find excuses and reasons to lower the bar as you see fit. You even state that after a plea to return it, you wouldn't. Says a lot about your character right there.

familyman, there's a difference between taking money from a wallet, where it will stay untouched, and from the street, where it will get stolen. money spills in the street, *someone* will steal it. i wouldn't take an apple pie from a window, but if i see money left in a cash machine, i'm taking it, or the next guy will.. and he will. it's just called being realistic.

I wouldn't take it. I'm going to steal someone else's money so I can have a GTX 980 in my rig instead of a 970 and an i7-5960x instead of a Xeon E3?

No. I wouldn't even stop because the cops would probably be knocking on my door within 6-8 weeks.

What is the risk of the bills being serialized? That is my only concern.

Grab as much as I reasonably could and run. Slowly spend it over time.
