I spilled a protein shake on my laptop this morning, not a whole lot but enough that it wouldn't turn on until I had it dry up..it was able to turn back on and everything seemed to be fine for about 30 minutes until all I saw was a white screen.

Right now I'm connected to an external LCD and all seems to be good still, but the actual laptop LCD is obviously screwed up and just flashes white.

Should I just give it time and hope that it'll comeback, or is there another strategy to get it back?

PS it's a Dell 1420 laptop.

Where was the spill? on the keyboard or was the lid closed and the spill was on top?

If video works through the ext monitor, I would think that either the inverter got wet or the liquid managed to get on a ribbon cable for the video and made it's way to the connector on the mobo.

If you know how to take it apart, pull the keyboard and plastic bezel and check the motherboard for spiders, I mean protien shake leavings.

It was in my backpack at the time so the lid as closed and it spilled mostly on top--but it seemed to infiltrate the insides as well..

From what I've read it probably is the inverter and I'll try to take it apart this weekend..

If I have to replace my inverter would a place like Fry's have it? Are there general ones or would I have to order a specific one off Ebay or something?

Sometimes very specific... You will probably either have to buy it using the model and make of the notebook and screen size or use the part # printed on the inverter module.
