David and Elaine McClain were forced to flee their home to avoid the death threats.

Wonder how much Spikey had to pay?
i hope it's million$!

Do not infuse racially motivated undertones in thread titles, it renders them to be flamebait and needlessly inflammatory.

Original Unacceptable Title: Spike Lee pays up for tweeting wrong addr of the white Florida vigilante

Edited Title: Spike Lee pays up for tweeting wrong addr of the Florida vigilante

As a general PSA: If I detect a pattern of such racially motivated thread titles from any given member then I will remove their posting privileges from P&N.

"I Deeply Apologize To The McClain Family For Retweeting Their Address. It Was A Mistake. Please Leave The McClain's In Peace.Justice In Court,"
That jackass is apologizing for tweeting the wrong address, but he should be apologizing for tweeting any address at all. If someone had used the information he tweeted and committed a crime against the occupants, he could have been held criminally liable, and most certainly would have been civilly liable. He apologized to this couple and paid them a nice chunk of money (because he would have gotten sued otherwise anyway), it just goes to show that people need to settle the heck down and let the legal process run it's course.

I'm sure spike would not be pleased if someone posted his address and posted his whereabouts during the day.

Stupid dick shouldn't have posted it to begin with, whether it was wrong or not.

I'm no fan of Mr. Lee, but at least after he made an idiot mistake he apologized and paid his unintended victims something to mitigate the damage they suffered. I've fucked up worse and done less in my time, i'm not going to condemn him.

This. Though Mr. Lee should have apologized for his intent, not that he tweeted the incorrect address.

It appears Mr. Lee doesn't feel any remorse for his motives.

How so?
Please elaborate......

Plenty of whites and non blacks in his movies hired by him......

I don't know if Lee is racist or not, but to think that just because non-blacks are in his films is a sign of non-racism is silly.

Were there not blacks in the 70's era exploitation films?

While it will never happen, Lee should use twitter to quell this vigilantism that is building, not feed it. What he did was so irresponsible.

What I want to know is: what did Lee expect to happen, and what did he think would happen, by the tweetage of the address?

This was definitely a stupid and irresponsible thing for Mr. Lee to do, and his apology seems blatantly insincere (plus, what's up with the random capitalization of every word?). I would expect he paid considerably more than $10K to settle this so quickly - I would guess more like $50-100K. In that sense the McClains are lucky that he retweeted this - otherwise they would still be faced with the same danger but without a public apology and financial settlement.

He tweeted their address thinking it would illicit some vigilante justice. Had a white person tweeted the addresses of the two black boys who lit the white boy on fire, Lee would've been the one calling the white person racist for endangering the lives of those black people. QED Lee is a racist for doing something to white people that he would not tolerate being done to black people.

Calling this "an act of terrorism" is silly hyperbole, unless you seriously equate tweeting someone's address to, say, 9/11 or the Oklahoma City bombing.

It's not on that scale, but imagine what he wanted to have happen to the real address, and how he was directly inciting it. I don't picture any normal person getting away with that crime.
