Spidey's weekend car

spidey07

No Lifer
So I wanna weekend car. Something that is just fun to drive. Given that we have other drivers on the board what do you think?

Total price = under 20K. Most important to me is overall feel and ability to get sideways without concern.

My only two thoughts are:
1) miata - beef up the motor, tranny, tire
2) MR2 (still loved how my old one felt, like a go cart) and do the same.

Keep in mind this car is for fun only. Go cart is what I want.

Thanks!

Well the miata will probably be more fun and it's insanely easy to work on. The MR2 is cool because of it's rarady though. I was going to sell the miata and get an mr2 turbo but they are just too expensive. It's crazy to spend $8 grand on a 14 year old car with 140k miles. Anyway you can make the miata as fast as an mr2 turbo for pretty cheap.

Lots of domestic choices too, if you like em.

I have a hard time fitting into a RX7. Great drivers though.

-edit-
What other choice are there for "super fun to drive and insane power?"

The whole "roadster" aspect is very appealing.

Spidey is 6'3.

Other option I can think of and one of the most fun cars i remember is the BMW Z3 M convertible.

If you're 6'3" I'm afraid that you're going to have trouble fitting in a Miata or an MR2.

Funny thing is you are right.

Believe it or not the Z3 M, I had plenty of room.

Maybe S2000? But even those are a little cramped for me.

Used S2000. Don't have to mess with it like a miata, if you want to, a SC or suspension will do wonders. Just don't drive it in the rain.

I'll be the first to suggest domestic: V8 RWD something. Camaro, Firebird, Mustang? I bet you could get a used '04 GTO cheap as sh!t. None of these handle really well out of the box, but plenty of torque to put you sideways ANY time you want.

I loved the S2000, but I have the common complaint of having to wind it out.

Can a SC help with that?

Miata is a good choice

Boxsters can be had around $20k if you look long enough.

A 911 SC or Carrera can easily be had for $12-15k and have the rest for play money on it. (I've driven my SC every day for a year, 25 years old and I've only done really standard maintenance stuff) Get one of these as a Targa and you have most of the fun of a roadster. Have a friend that is 6'4ish and about 275+ and he fits fine in his 911 after he dropped the rails for a little headroom, easy to do.

If you don't mind working on it a lot, old British roadsters are tons of fun.

It'd be a little over 20, but the Pontiac Solstice actually looks pretty cool, and the Saturn Sky that's coming out is supposedly based basically on the same design as the Lotus Elise.

There are a few 6' 4" MK2 MR2 owners. It's tight, but it works. One possibility is getting a lower seat. The stock one is pretty thick.

240SX is a nice choice, though the SR swap does prove difficult with the DMVs of many states. Again, 6' 3" is right at the limits though. Definitely skip the sunroof.

i like the mr2, but because of its short wheelbase it's very difficult to go sideways.

rx7 if you want to go sideways, it's the ultimate drift machine.

I think the S2000 is more cramped than the miata.

He said he wanted something that handled like a go cart, not a golf cart. 😛
