so my wife and i are out on the deck drinking a tasty local Colorado craft beer, enjoying the cool evening and watching the sun set over the rocky mountains. We notice a small garden spider start spinning a web between my two tiki torches.

the little guy took about a hour to make his web, watching it build its trap was amazing. after his web was done he darted back and hid behind the tiki torch. it wasnt long before some bug got trapped. Mr. spider came darting out, grabbed it and cocooned it, repaired his web and wet back to his hiding spot and it was not long before his dessert got trapped.

Nature can be cool to watch. Thumbs up Mr. spider for the free entertainment tonight.

I did something like that with spiders when I was about 16 years old with my step mother.

We had a brick pile we were turning into a future patio that had several webs in it, I came home from school once and started tossing a few ants into webs and tossed an ant or two into them. She was fascinated and started doing it also.

My father about kicked my ass the next day, I guess she woke up in the middle of the night having nightmares about spiders :p

Was weird later in life I was dating a woman for awhile was about the same age as my stepmom, she was only 10 years older than I was and they both were at the same high school football game when they cheerleaders at the time. Was on a camping trip and was odd having the woman I was dating talking to my stepmom about being at the same game, from different schools.

But that is another story :)

Yep.

Pretty much if you stare at any spot on the ground long enough you'll witness something similar, with some critter.

Ants in particular are absolutely incredible. Watch ants for a few hours and I swear, you will believe they are just like us socially. It's remarkable.

Jumping spiders are awesome as well.

I hope we can "get into" things brains at some point, as in like Vulcan mind meld level stuff. I would be a little surprised if animals and even insects aren't actually having "experiences" just like we are. I think we're a little naive in this regard; anybody who has pets(of any type!) knows this.

Last month my appartment was invaded by some food flies from neighbours and few of the spiders came out of nowhere, quickly sewed their webs and caught/killed dozens of them. However I had to disinsect the whole place including the spiders. However I don't really like spiders or any insects in general. Guess how they look is the cause.

While I can appreciate the ridiculous, symmetrical, almost ADHD-like webs .....

I disagree. They should all be burned with fire. Or nuked from orbit.

I had an encounter with a jumping spider that was fun. It was dragging a fly up to a hiding spot on a lawn chair and dropped it. I had been watching for a while, and speared the fly with a wood splinter and offered it back. The spider turned to look at me, looked at the fly, and took it off the splinter and went on its way.
The jumpers have excellent vision. I had no doubt it was looking at me, not my hand or the fly when it turned my way.

Spiders are ridiculously awesome.

Outside - and not crawling anywhere near me. And if I happen to catch one on me? Or walk into a web? Yikes. I'm not very calm about that. D:

Inside? It's smashing time. I have zero respect for spiders invading my domicile. Outside, in their world? Fascinating creatures. Jumping spiders especially - it's like they get me, and I get them and their ADHD. :D

I had a spider with a ~4" leg spread in my slop bucket I use for compost. He ran away when I dumped coffee grounds in it; whereabouts unknown. I just think happy thoughts when I'm in the kitchen, and hope it doesn't walk on me.
