spiderman question...

hey, i don't really follow comics much, but i just wondered....

what's so special about the alien costume that eventually becomes venom? it looks cool and all, but did it make spiderman stronger? also....cosmic spider man....was that when he had the alien costume? insight woud be much appreciated. thanx

If i remember...and this is thinking way back...Spiderman was in the cosmic wars. He was one of the few heroes left. He was offered this special symbiotic "suit" that would make him faster, stronger, and take almost any damage. To help save the galaxy, he reluctantly accepted. They won the war and he returned with the suit and slowly the suit made him more and more agressive. The one weakness of the suit was sound, so to save himself he trapped himself in a bell tower and rang the suit off. It found some dude (please dont lynch me for not remembering his name) that also hated spiderman/peter parker. Since the suit already knew that spiderman was peter parker, they struck up a deal to kill him. Ever since then they have hunted down spiderman. Also, the dude name carnage was created from a crazy person and a piece of venom's suit, but thats another story.

Sorry if that explanation is vague.

the guys name was eddie brock, and i think he hated parker cuz he THOUGHT parker got him fired from the paper, when it was really someone else's fault or something

and i thought the suit came to earth when jonah jameson's son (an astronaut) accidentally brought it back with him from a trip in space

it was actually a living organism... a symbiote (prolly didn't spell that right)

If I also recall as well, the reason the suit and Eddie Brock became a pair since Eddie hated Peter Parker as detailed by Joe Monkey while the suit hated him for spurning it.

during the secret wars, spidermans costume was torn from a recent battle and he needed a way to repair it. Someone stated to spidey that there was a machine in the base that repaired everyone's costumes but he unknowingly tried the wrong machine and as a result his costume turned black. At first he thought it was simply a costume enhancement but later began realizing that it gave him more energy, power, and strength then ever before. Eventually (a while after the secret wars ended) he learned that it also made him more agressive in nature and that it was trying to merge with himself. With the help of Mr. Fantastic they discovered that it was not a costume but a symbiote. I cant remember the exact details after this but Spiderman uses the bells from a cathedral to get the symbiote off of him and effectively rejecting it. the symbiote finds eddie brock, a person sharing in the symbiotes new found hatred of peter parker. The two gladly merge and the symbiote gives eddie all of peter parker's memories, ambitions and fears. Not to mention the symbiote learned how to mimic spiderman's powers and amplify them.
btw, eddie hated parker because (i think) eddie made a bogus story about some mass murderer and peter debunked the whole thing, causing eddie to lose his job.

that was in the cartoon, which although was entertaining, had little in common with the chronology of the comic books.

Well since the alien costume has been pretty much covered, here's what I remember of Cosmic Spidey. There is something called the Captain Universe power that floats around in the Marvel universe. It inhabits individuals and temporarily imbues them with cosmic powers (wow, cosmic!). This usually happens to normal folks before some dire event takes place that is up to them to stop. When someone gets imbued with these powers they are also supposed to know that they have become Captain Universe, but at the moment Spidey was imbued he was caught in a freak energy blast that blocked this knowlege (what are the chances?). So he was running around with these cosmic (!) powers for a while pretty aimlessly and without knowing where they came from. But eventually it came to him, just as whatever dire event was coming together that the cosmic powers inhabited him to stop in the first place. So he defeats whatever evil it was (I can't remember what it was exaclty, but I think it was lame) and the (cosmic!) powers move on to the next host and dire event. The end.

And I believe they did 2 "What if?" comics on these two spiderman derivatives; one being "What if Spiderman never detached himself from Venom?", and the other being "What if the cosmic power never left Spiderman?"
