Here's a silly question. One of my computers is in a rather dark corner of the room. I have one of the slot load dvd roms, and I noticed a small spider in the opening. I tried to chase it out, but it ran inside. I tried those blower cans, but nothing came out. Do you think it would damage my drive if I go ahead and stick a cd in there? I really can't see the darn thing anymore, but I didn't see it come out either. Is there a back way out of these drive?

Hehehe, you can't help but chuckle at this. I don't think it'll hurt anything unless the spider is unlucky enough to be squashed on the laser lens... then you could have problems.

Leave the thing overnight and it will probably crawl out on its own.

The spider got through a gap in the dust guard, and I think it can't get out because it can't find its way out the same gap. Is there a way to remove this?

We have had to turn off the smoke detectors in our home -- we live on the edge of a large forest -- because spiders were always getting in the chamber where the ions are absorbed to detect smoke and setting the damn things off. Since they are nocturnal beasts, the alarms were always going off in the early morning hours.

Wow, I take the spider isn't too large. At least for my slot load Pioneer DVD drive, there's no gap really big enough except for the smallest of insects.

In any case, I have a few random thoughts. Make it real bright outside the drive. Hopefully it'll crawl out. Or, if it's dead, a little dust never hurt too much, what about a spider? :)

I say forget it was ever there. It may get squashed or it may crawl out. If it gets squashed just hope it doesnt mess anything up. I was once working on my computers on the floor once and I saw a HUGE cockroach so I chased it around my room for a while into it ran into my computer! I tried to get it out but it crawled behind my motherboard. So the only thing I could do was wait until it came out. Once that bitch came out I stomped on it like there was no tomorrow. The only worry, and this could be a worry for you too, is that if the thing laid eggs or anything in there!

Just take your drive out of your computer and open it up. You should be able to find it once the cover is off.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha.....

Not to laugh at the situation, but I never thought that my training as an Arachnologist would come in handy in this Forum.

I would say that nothting really serious will happen to your DVD Drive....the lense may get a bit dirty from trailing silk (most spiders trail a line of silk behind them, for various reasons, but mostly to save themselves from falls (sort of like a climbers belay line). If it left the system or not really depends on what type of spider it was. A cursorial hunter would wonder around looking for prey and would not saty in one place. A web spinning spider will look for a place to set up "shop" which for many means some type of dark place where they can spin a web (for most of the types found in your home). A light near the drive would only attract one type of spider found inside the home (jumping spider) but the heat given off from that would repel even them.
More than likely turning your computer on killed the spider since many are suseptible to dessication and we all know how hot and dry computers are.

I wouldn't worry about this........if you are, just stick in a cleaning disk ensure that your lense isn't gunked up.

Oh, and I won't pass along all the "fry it" comments to the very large spider sitting in a container in my computer room....or the scorpion for that matter either

Thanks for the advices. I pulled my drive out, and jammed a piece of cardboard into the opening to keep the lint guard open, and left the drive lot side up overnight. Plugged it back in just now...no spiders, and no problems :)

Guys if you think eyez's story was good listen to this one.

In 10th grade Bio this year my teacher has mice that we record the behavior of and stuff.

Well, we let them run around on the desks cuz they have enough sense not to fall off.

One day a little brown mice hops into my teacher's old mac that had a little metal plate off for some reason. The mouse is still in there to this day, my teacher put a plastic bag up to the hole to catch it if it falls out and puts some food there every day. The mouse ALWAYS eats the food but we never ever see him and cant hear him running around.

this was great, I bet we have missed a total of like 10 hours of class trying to get him out of there.

I love silly animals
