I recently upgraded from a D5000 to a D7100.
Beyond wanting newer tech, one of the reasons for upgrading was because i take a lot of photos of my dog. A lot. And I wanted faster focusing.
I'd have to say that the D7100 is faster and I have more hits -- but it isn't perfect.
Instead of 0-10% solid focus with dog running at me, I'd say I'm more like 20-30%... still don't think I've had 100% perfect focus either.
This is with the 70-200f4 that was purchased alongside the D7100.
So, maybe it is technique.
A few other observations about the D7100 upgrade
+ Crop space. Oh my.
- Many photos tend to underexpose 1/2 - 1 stop... at least what I'm used to with the D5000.
- I'm noticing, when processing RAW files, that the color rendition is off. And I can't figure it out. In Lightroom, I find myself pulling the TINT slider towards magenta, and I've never done that before. In general, I feel like the colors don't look right and then I adjust them screwed up in LR. Some of these examples will highlight my color rendition struggles. (Although some number of them have been over "Clarity"-ified and slightly oversaturated)
+ The camera has a metric shit-ton of knobs and buttons. I thought it would be pretty quick to pick up - and it is... sorta. The fact is, the camera has a tremendous number of settings compared to the D5000. It's almost overwhelming. I have something to grow into.
+/- The achilles heel of the D7100 is it's buffer size. While it has ~ 6fps shooting, the buffer fills after 1-1.5 seconds of shooting then doodles along at ~2-3 fps until I let up.
+/- The camera feels larger than the D5000, but not necessarily in a bad way. There is more to get a grip on.
