Got home yesterday after spending three weeks on two different tugs.

First two weeks - working in a fleet, which means we stored and moved barges. If a refinery did not have room for the barge we stored it until the refinery had dock space. We would pull a barge out of storage, then deliver it to a larger tug. The larger tug would then deliver the barge to the customer. Some of the barges we handed off to larger tugs were going as far away as Mississippi.

Third week - working on a push tug. We move a single bottle barge filled with isobutane between two different refineries. The bottle barge had 3 pressure vessels on it that held a total of something like 16,000 gallons.

Will not list company name.
Will not list boat names.

I will say I worked between Houston and Corpus Christi - 2 weeks in Houston, one week in Coupus.

The hardest part of the job was being away from home. The third and fourth day were the hardest. The captain yelled at me over the radio for doing something wrong. A few minutes later I had a small emotional breakdown. I cried a little, but regained my composure.

There are some women tugboat captains in the Corpus area, but they are few and far between. During the three weeks I did not see a single woman.

The best part of the job is the skies and water at night.

Well, might as well get the obvious out of the way... Did you "tug one out" while on the tug?

aww....

Being away from family isn't easy, but it was just 3 weeks. Emotional breakdown from the captain yelling at you?? You aren't one of these "needs a hug at work" kind of guys are you? Sack up man!

It only took 4 days at sea to break you? And you cried? If I ever see a male over the age of 10 crying, I will shame them into such an emotionally scared place, their tear ducts will cease to function.

Are you going to ask the mods to change your username from Texashiker to Texastugger?

16000 gallons? Why not just ship via truck? I think for LPG, a standard sized semi-trailer hauls 15,000 gallons. Seems a lot cheaper to have one truck with one driver versus a tugboat, barge, and crew. And it could have been half way across the country in a day, let alone a week of being pushed by a tugboat.

You cried after being yelled at by your boss? My God, if you had ever entered the armed forces, you'd have spent boot camp in your barracks crying your eyes out.

True story, first day of basic, I witnessed at least two people literally piss themselves from being yelled at.

Sorry, that is 16,000 bbls, not gallons.

http://www.floridamarine.com/lpg/

The Florida Marine Pressure Vessel Class barges were built in two different designs to allow Florida Marine to offer to its customers either a two bottle or a three bottle configuration. Both configurations have a capacity over 16,000 BBL’s

I do not work for Florida marine. that page is just for reference.

I never saw anyone piss themselves. There was some crying/whimpering at night. They got blanket parties. One guy tried to OD on Tylenol.
