I just recieved all the stuff I'd ordered online yesterday, and after I finished putting it all together, of course, nothing worked. Before I get into it, here's a list of what's in the system.

Soyo KT400 Dragon Ultra (Black)
Athlon XP2000+
Samsung 512MB PC2700 DDR
Visiontek Geforce 4 Ti4200
WD400 40GB HD
LiteOn DVD
LiteOn 48X CDRW

Now, I have a 250W power supply in my case. The MB manual says minimum 250W, and when I turn the system on, it runs for about 5 seconds then turns off and begins a long beep. The manual says this is either a lack of power, or the CPU is overheating. I know the CPU can't be overheating, so I go with the idea that the power supply isn't supplying enough power. Just to see if it will post, I unplug EVERYTHING from the motherboard and leave only the CPU and the video card installed. Same problem.

Thinking that it's the power supply, I go out and purchase a 350W unit. But then, just for kicks, my roomate installs the CPU into his computer, and he can't make it post either. So we take HIS CPU, an XP1700+, and plug it into my Soyo and again I get the same problem. So I can't tell if it's the CPU, or the motherboard, or both.

Now, I'd appreciate any advice, but I also have a question for anyone who happens to have the same MB. Is 250W not enough to power that motherboard and CPU, or is it likely I recieved two bad items in one batch?

Thanks in advance.

Did his cpu work in his machine after taking it back out of yours? Which power supply was in there when you tried his cpu?

250w is totally insufficient for what you are trying to do. 300w is generally considered to be the minimum, with more needed in consideration of the high draw of that type of video card, plus how many fans you have running, etc. BTW, I assume that you have visually checked the CPU fan as you are trying to boot, and it is in fact operating at what appears to be full speed. HOWEVER, it should at least POST and boot part way into Windows before failing.

Unplug the power cord, unplug the power supply to motherboard cable, then use the jumper on your motherboard to reset it to default settings. While you have it unplugged, install your new 350w PS, as that is closer to what you should have anyway.

If this allows it to POST, then reset the RAM frequency to where it should be for your system. If it still boots, then reset the FSB frequency to the correct setting. If it will post with default settings, but not with the CPU at full speed, then replace the CPU. Under no circumstances put that little 250w power supply back in!

I agree that power supply is totally inadequate. Even the 350 may be marginal if its not a good one.

Almost any supply will work with no drives or anything connedted.
Check the BIOS reset jumper it may be in the wrong place.
Make sure the mouse and keyboard are not plugged into the wrong sockets, there are some boards that will not boot without mouse and keyboard and not boot with them plugged into the wrong sockets.
Take the motherboard out of the case or take out all the mounting screws and slip a piece of paper under the MB and see if it will boot.
Do you have the CPU fan plugged into the proper socket on the motherboard?
Do the fans spin up?
Make sure that the switch on the back of the power supply is in the 110 volt setting and not 220, if set on 220 you will only get 1/2 voltage to the motherboard.
If none of this helps post back here.

What BIOS you running? I found the aa3 to be best so far, there is a newer one out, but its not an official release yet.

Yes, hell yes, dump that PWS. 350 will be fine.

Mushkin...(I likey... PC3200 DDR400 while not an official spec, it is guranteed by the great Mush lol.

Hey was great how you called back LOL.. you're a classic.
