Help! I can't spell, does anybody know of a good way to improve it? Not that I haven't been ribbed for my poor grammar for as long as I can remember, but damnit, I am just sick of not being able to spell! I am serious I need help.

Spell check. ;) Seriously, though, the best way to learn to spell correctly is to read - A LOT. That should also help your grammar problem.

unxpurg8d,
I am well read and enjoy reading a great deal. It's a simple matter of I before E, How many M's in a long word etc.... Granted I fried many brain cells at an early age, but still, I just don't get it. I simply can't spell for the life of me.

I have been fortunate enough to be good at spelling without having to work at it. To unxpurg8d's point, I read a LOT. My wife used to be an atrocious speller, but since she has started to read much more, her spelling is greatly improved.

I think there is indeed a connection there. I don't spell words by memorizing the spelling, I can look at the word and "see" if it's right or wrong. That must come from reading. The words I tend to misspell (words ending in -ance/-ence among others) don't "look" wrong to me when I screw them up, and the spell-checker saves me in those cases.

Spell checkers are no substitute for knowing which word to use, though, since they can't save you when you use a correctly-spelled wrong word. Our local paper runs a column about spelling/grammar questions that features mistakes people spot and send in called "Typo of the Weak".

Some examples:
"We proudly feature some-day shipping."
"Our massage treatments help relive your pain."
"Sign up now for our Beauty and Fitness Curse."
"The penis mightier than the sword."

My vocabulary is extremely well rounded. I attribute that to my subscrition to Car and Driver. The articles are well edited and can be read without fear of picking up bad grammatical habits. My advice to you is to buy a magazine that covers a subject that appeals to you. Let's hope it's not Penthouse or PlayBoy *snicker*.

LOL Kranky, there's just no replacement for human proofreaders, is there? Our local newspaper is always coming up with real winners, but my favorite HAS to be:

"Golf course shop attendant wanted. Must bed 21." I of course called and asked if that "bedding 21" was concurrently, consecutively, or just a prerequisite. Geeeeez.

Shux, I can understand your problem. When it comes to math of any kind I'm illiterate. :( I think it's some sort of brain short circuit.

Again I read extensively, I have numerous subscriptions and have many, 600-1000 page reference books I consitently read, math I have no problems with at all, even "fuzzy" LOL, but I am really beggining to wonder if it is indeed a chemical problem.
