Two of the last 5 finalists were Asian Indian. One was a "veteran" in his 4th final, and this year's champion.
The other kid, Samir, was a 9-year old 3rd grader who already spells better than 99.99% of Americans could ever dream of spelling. Needless to say, he was the crowd favorite.
I didn't think it was "exciting" TV, and had no business being on ESPN2, but I did watch the last 15 minutes or so to see who won the damn thing. The announcers said the 5 hour final was unprecedented in length. The last group were all young kids. I wonder if there's an age cap, or if middle school kids just find more interesting academic pursuits once they reach high school. You'd imagine the intense training for spelling should "grow old" around that time (considering how young they must start off at).
