So I'm writing this essay and I need to use the number 10. Do I say .... ten items... or .... 10 items ...?

I know that 1-9 you spell out and 11+ you type, but do you spell or type 10?

edit: also, what about comparing 12 and 10?

like:
The number of items dropped from 12 to ten?
or
The number of items dropped from twelve to ten?
or
the number of items dropped from 12 to 10?
Thx!

ten.

I would go so far as to type out every single-word number.

I've been told than anytime you can type a single word to represent the number then it should be typed. If more than one word then it is ok to use the number.

Ten. Use numerals if you're using a table or a formula. Use letters if it's a sentence.
