Speedy SCSI or Big IDE?

I currently have a 18gig IDE harddrive. I'm thinking about selling it and get a 9gig SCSI harddrive. I already have a burner, so space isn't that big of a deal. I also have a SCSI card too. So what do you guys think? Go for space or speed?

I used to have 9gig Macropolis UW, but it crapped on me. So I exchanged it for 18gig Quantum KA+.

If you don't care about size and money isn't that big of an issue then go scsi. You could keep the ide for storing files and such. Use the scsi as the boot drive and things should be much faster than ide depending on which scsi drive you get. If you can afford it then get the seagate X15. I hear its awesome.

Best price/perf ratio comes from running ur OS, apps & swap off a small (9GB), fast (10Krpm) SCSI drive, and using a big-@ss IDE drive for everything else - like MP3s, back-ups, Ghost images, downloads, etc.

I did what you were thinking b0red, got a quantum atlas 10K for my HD instead of a big IDE. Then I ran out of room. Now I have both like Radboy says. I use the scsi for my main boot drive and dump stuff like mp3's ect.. to the 20gig ide.

Go SCSI if you can afford it. When you run out of room...upgrade. :) That's what I did, I now have an 18GB Atlas 10K, and I'm trying to sell my old 9GB IBM 18ES and 4.5GB Atlas II. In fact, if you're interested, email me :)

it's interesting how for some reason, there aren't any NORMAL mass storage type drives available in SCSI form.. that would be nice having IBM making a SCSI mass storage drive (like a 75GXP, only SCSI!). the important stuff (OS, other stuff needing fast access) would go on the main SCSI drive, then the MP3's, some games, etc would go on the mass storage drive!

anywho, if I were in your position, I would not worry too much about space, becuase a CD Burner for me, solves almost all my space problems (I'm running a 4.3 gig IDE drive here). I just know how to control the amount of crap (shareware proggies etc) that comes on here, and am able to keep Windows itself, down to a manageable size for longer then many hardcore users (I have a friend who knows jack about computers, he has to reformat like every 3 to 6 months! LOL, but he uses it all the time! you'd think he'd learn at least a little bit!). the only thing that REALLY takes up space in the end, are games.

now, also, I have learned over the past little while, the SCSI is alot better then IDE in terms of CPU usage. that counts for a lot with me. So if I were to get a SCSI harddrive, I'd go ALL SCSI, and disable my onboard IDE stuff (the IDE controllers take up IRQ's!). that limits me in terms of the amount of overall hard drive space, but, if I can live ok on a 4.3 gig hard drive, then I think 9 gig's is heaven!
