speedy HDD's: Raptor 74gig VS RAID 0 setup

So I've been thinking...I want to load fast, but I also want a decent amount of storage available as well.

Here were my solutions, Western Digital Raptor SATA 74gb 10krpm drive(or could even wait for the 150gb version for that matter as well) for loading all of my programs off of it and a separate drive for some decent storage, or.....buying like 2 identical drives(around 250-300gb) and doing a raid0 with them.

I haven't seen any side by side comparisons(raptor vs. conventional 7200rpm HDD's), but I have seen some benchmarks that showed the raid 0 setup being nearly twice as fast compared to just a single drive.

What's your take, which one would probably be better? Price is of course a consideration, but performance is almost equal(I could justify paying more for it), I'm trying to do this for under $250(add a little more to that...if need be, but I usually wait for sales to fire the button)

isnt a good raid card ~$250-300 anyway? that may single out the raid for you anyway. you dont wanna go w/ software raid either because that just has bad news written all over it. if you want the best performance stripe two of the 150gb raptors when they come out. that is going to be quite cost prohibitive.

id say go with the raptor for your price point. if you try to go raid the card alone will cost too much and hinder your spending on the hdds. the new 150gb raptor is supposed to be faster and cost ~$250. not sure when it comes out but ya might wanna look into that

Ah, so I do need a separate raid controller card??? I thought I didn't need one since my mobo said that it supported raid0/1(was under the impression that it was built onto the mobo and didn't need a card, just plug it into the sata ports.)

i could be wrong but im pretty sure thats software raid. again i could be wrong maby someone else would be able to answer this one.

Yes (sw Raid) and of more concern is that your striping info is on the MBraid controller, if the MB has to be returned to the Mfr then you also loose your Raid.
