Speedstream DSL router, no POP

I'm currently working on a computer for a client who uses Alltel as his ISP. Browsing the internet works just fine, the problem is that he cannot access his email. He can send, but cannot receive, getting a server timeout error. I double-checked the account settings and they're correct. I added a new email account using Charter's email server and got the same problem. I've tried multiple email clients, getting the same results with each one. From the command prompt, I cannot get a response from pinging a FQDN, even though the DNS appears to be working, as it resolves the name to an IP address.
I took the computer back home with me to work on it, and now that it's connected to my network it works fine. My ISP is Charter. So I'm fairly certain that the problem is with his modem, which is a Speedstream 5200. He claims that everything was working fine until a couple of weeks ago when lightning took out his computer's power supply. After getting the power supply replaced, these email issues appeared.
There's nothing more I can do with it here, and I don't want to be completely clueless when I bring it back over to his house. Any ideas what the problem could be?

The 5200 is a Router too.

Check on which ports the ISP is using for POP email and make sure that that there if needed ports are opened. If the computer has Software Firewall check there as well.

:sun:

You shouldn't need to open any ports on the router for email, recieving is still initiated by the client and most consumer routers don't block outgoing traffic.

The windows firewall is a possiblility, but it blocks on an application-by-application basis, so if you're clear to send you should be clear to recieve. Check the 'exceptions' settings in security center anyway.

Have you tried telnetting into the mail server?

Try restarting the modem, or resetting the firmware. There's a little button on the bottom of the 5200.

Those modems get really jumbled by power surges.
