I found a few of these videos on Youtube recently. This morning I decided to check out the website. It's pretty cool actually: http://marathon.speeddemosarchive.com/history#sgdq2013. Organization called Speed Demos Archives.
They take many classic and some mondern games and do speedruns through them with varying criteria. This is streamed over the internet, and people give donations to charity in support of the run. In some cases, there will be an incentive to donate - for example the runner will unlock a hidden room or perform some other glitch if a certain dollar amount is raised.
Sounds very niche to me, but they've still manged to make some extremely cool videos. This is my fav: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M7IINwTFVw Ocarina of time in 22 minutes. I've watched this start to finish twice now.
The very cool thing though is that they've raised over a million dollars for charity in just four years. Their average live viewership at the last event was 27,500 over four days. Impressive.
Next event is early January. The list of games they'll run is here http://marathon.speeddemosarchive.com/schedule. Borderlands 2, 4-way coop is on there. I might watch that one!
