Speeding up Torrent download

I'm currently downloading a very large file (4GB) via a bittorrent client. I'm only getting 5kb/s download speed though and 35+kb/s upload speed. I have a 512kb/s DSL connection, sothats not the problem. Is there a way to speed up the download? at 5kb/s it's gonna take a while to download a 4 gig file.

If the source of the torrent can only provide 5 kb/s, then you're not going to get anything faster than that unless you can find an alternate (faster) source. Go to a reliable site like Microsoft.com and try to download a large file like the Windows XP SP2 network distribution file and see what your download speed looks like. If you only get 5 kb/s there, then you have a problem with your DSL and need to talk to your ISP. If the download works fine, then you simply have a bad/slow torrent source.

1) cap your upload to something more reasonable. like 15KB/s. your upload can choke your download if you're uploading too much.

2) when downloading a huge file with bit torrent, your downloads will usually be slower because it takes longer to be a seeder (there aren't too many seeders are there?). the more downloaders there are, the slower the torrent will be. you'll just have to hang in there.

Wrong guys, the problem is probably that you have a wireless router. If yu do, you have to go to www.portforward.com and find your router on the list. There you will find a guide on how to speed up your torrents in general 🙂

With the info give they are not neccesarily wrong, But there is a range of ports that you can forward in your router settings that should increase your download speed.
