Speeding ticket question

On March 17th,I literally had the worst day of my life!First some black guys broke into my car and ripped out my Pioneer-XM/MP3 player, then while I was driving to circuitcity to get a new one,I get pulled over and ticketed for doing 54mph in a 35 mph zone!
I tried explaining to the officer about my situation but it was of little use.
Today I received the speeding ticket for 116.50.I also the option of the Indiana Lake County Infrraction Deferral Program(that thing will take a few more days to arrive).
Now my problem is that I am an international student at Purdue and have no idea about how the legal system works.
I also have a copy of the poilce report filed prior to the ticket on the same day and I had reported wire damage to my console and speedometer(they broke a section of the dashboard!) along with the stolen radio. Is that by itself likely to get my ticket dismissed?
Or should I just take the Infraction Deferral and bear the $1xx+stolen radio cost?It just seems so damn unfair!
If someone has any experience, how long is it usually between the ticket date and the court appearance(if I opt to plead not guilty)?

You might want to consult a lawyer...

As far as the time between getting the ticket and assigned a court date, in my experience, it takes MONTHS. *sigh*

Good luck!

so you cant tell the difference btw 54 and 35mph? gimme a break. pay the fine. youre lucky, speeding tickets out here are close to 400 me thinks.

btw, WWYBYWB

You're not going to get any help with the broken electronics/gauges...what, they didn't work so you drove faster? If you have a clean record, ask for driving school or whatever they offer you to keep the points off your record and just pay the fine.

i've gone through the indiana infraction deferral program three times, in two counties. don't bother with going to court, they won't cut you any slack. pay the $152 or whatever to get the deferral instead of paying the ticket and it won't go on your record.

Find out when the police officer has training, and then schedule a court date for that day so he won't be able to come and then the ticket goes away.

lol no idea if this works read it somewhere can't remember where.

Won't work. They can get a continuance. And you don't set your own court date.

OP - was your speedometer actually not working? You said there was "wire damage" but you didn't explicitly say the speedometer wasn't working. Regardless, you should know your car well enough to know the difference between 35 and 54. Heck, I rarely look at my speedometer when I'm driving.

Get the deferral, pay the fine, don't get caught again for 6 months.

Thanks for the response guys,I'm waiting for the Infraction Deferral papers to arrive by mail:will probably go for that option. The thing is: I was already very angry and frustrated(being a student with little money is tough,to have ur precious stuff stolen is worse) and probably stepped on the gas too much w/o realizing it(I can't be robbed and ticketed the same day, can I?I mean how angry must the Lord be with me,LOL?WRONG!) and a few seconds later when I saw the lights in my rear view mirror,I got that sinking feeling realizing that I had just compounded my agony.
The worst part is the theft occured at The Purdue dorms and the culprits(who probably still live here) were never caught.Wheres the justice in that?
On a lighter note $150=some nice 2 gigs of ram from the egg!

it could be worse. you could have driven your car into a 6 foot ditch full of water like i did a few weeks ago. at least you still have a car you can drive 😉

It's a shame that people actually SAW them stealing your stuff and didn't watch where they went so they could be caught.

"Officer, I was speeding because I accidently chopped off my hand and I need to get to the hospital before I bleed to death" might fly as an excuse for speeding. "Officer, someone stole my stereo and I have to get to the store to replace it ASAP because I can't live without my tunes" not so much.

Its a shame really,I don't want to sound racist or anything but among many africans here the 'hood' culture prevails(planning to leave this place in a month) and they don't give a damn if a poor asian student gets robbed of his hard-earned money. The poilce are useless(university police!),they won't even take fingerprints of the screwdriver the perps left in my car.All I could do is get the headlines in the university paper and shame the dorm authorities.

I have no idea what you are talking about with the "hood" culture prevailing...West Lafayette is in no way the ghetto you make it sound like.

Most police officers wouldn't bother to take fingerprints off of a screwdriver left behind. There are more important things to worry about than a $150 stolen deck.

And if you consider West Lafayette the hood, please do me a favor and make the short drive up to Gary, IN just for personal experience.

Its Purdue Calumet actually, in Hammond,IN.I know about Gary and its statistics.Point is, this is not Gary,IN or Harvey,IL; its the Purdue dorms for chrissake! I would not be the least surprised if my whole car got stolen in either of these places(if I were stupid enough to venture there!)

cause we all know that campuses and dorms never have any crime...

So your dash was damaged along with your speedometer? Then you shouldn't be driving in the first place. Pay the fine. Bringing that up in court (should, but probably won't) get you a different fine.

Literally?

BTW, why did you just stand there like a wimp while a couple of dudes broke into your vehicle and stole your stereo? You must've been right there. I mean, you could identify there race and all.
