I disagree, most of the teenage kids I see are pretty fucking clueless. By your logic we should just kill them all.

I wasn't that stupid when I was their age.

i thought you were still a work in progress.

I don't get it...you have to be a pretty moronic driver to not understand the purpose of a school zone. It's the sudden stops and unloading that drives the need for these, plus those usually crossing at a non-intersection.

Are you ballers the same assholes that think flying 45-60mph down a 15-25mph residential road is proving your stand of dominance?

Are you one of those idiots that hasn't learned to look both ways before crossing a street?

My car idles at about 20 mph so it's annoying to have to ride the brake through the school zone, but for elementary schools I understand. Over that, the kids should know how to cross the street properly.

I always drive the speed limit when in school zone. I was hit by a car when I was kid, I don't really feel like smashing some kid ever.

is it during school hours only that it applies... I can't remember. Some slow, some don't. I lived directly across the street from a middle school at my parents'... and now just a couple blocks away from a high school. Kids will cross the street without looking the other way, cell phone in hand or just talking to their friends. It is suburbia so they don't expect a ton of traffic like in a city and undoubtedly they expect cars to see them.

nice.

Actually I own a home and lawn...I have to cut it. When someone is hauling ass down the road I could be a victim simply cutting my swale.

At the same time their are kids and pets in most residential areas that don't look both ways.

please don't post more on this topic.

The signs here all say "When children are present" underneath the posted limit. So you only have to reduce your speed if it's somewhere around opening or closing time for the school. The one school zone I drive through on my way to work is 30 mph from the normal 40 mph, but I never have to actually reduce my speed because I'm never driving past when there are children there.

that would be nice! too bad they don't have that here.

The signs here flash when the limit is in effect. So its only when school is taking up or letting out.

Are you saying the school zone limit is always enforced even when there is no school where you live? If so that would really suck.

I meant it would be nice if the sign said "only when children are present". In the area I'm talking about, they do have the flashing signs but I rarely ever see any kids near the road, plus this is a major road so there are not even kids walking home.

I don't mind the implementation of them (they're recent..) at elementary schools, but at highschools? jesus christ.
If you can't cross the street at age 14-18, maybe getting hit by a car will smarten you up... or at least smarten up the gene pool.

those are odd speeds...

I live right down the street from an elementary school. It's 25mph all the time up and down the whole street, but if you're speeding in the school zone your fine is doubled. A cop hangs out across the street from the school quite often. I probably see people pulled over in this spot once a month. Needless to say, I do not go above 25mph when during the first/last minute of my drive.

However, people speed all the time past the school on the other side of town because the limit is normally 35mph but goes down to 25mph when near the school.

Therefore, I conclude that speeding in school zones has something to do with the speed limit decreasing around schools but being higher further down the street and enforcement by police officers.

Maybe you should learn the lesson of note playing in the street or letting kids/animals run wild.

there are 10 cops in my town and all 10 seem to spend all day every day camped out in a speed trap on the opposite side of the one school in town.

even going the standard 5 mph over the posted limit is like just throwing money out the window; it's trained me to go the exact speed limit or under on all local roads... a couple months after first moving here, I was pulled over for going 37 in a 35 :Q (no ticket, just wasted time and a warning)

Or maybe they are converted from a standard measurement to an odd one...

Yes you were. Teenagers all think they know everything. Apparently you never grew out of it.

yep. 30km/h zone. outside schoolzone is 50km/h, and people usually go 40km/h or so.

My local school has a bunch of cops camped out during the rush. They always nail a bunch of people.

in the future you'd be better served stating the speeds in the units you are seeing.

Most will assume you are in the best country of the world and not some third world contender. :)

I figured most americans would be too dim to convert to miles, but the rest of the world could put it back to metric fine ;):p

One thing I have noticed is that most people don't go the posted 15 MPH through the school zone

One big difference between the motor city former megalopolis (where I grew up and learned to drive - outside detroit) and south florida is this.

In the midwest/great lakes - school zones aren't really enforced. You can go whatever speed and I never even got looked at.

Down here - go 1mph over and the officer guarding the zone (there is almost always a bike cop shooting laser) looks at you funny. 5 over and you get ticketed - double the norm due to school zone.
