Speeding car vs. Wisconsin State Trooper

Does anyone know what the formula for calculating speeding tickets is in Wisconsin?

This saturday I was on my way up from Chicago to go paintballing in southern Wisconsin. I was across the border and about 5 miles away from the paintball place. I was going 83 in a 65... which for the traffic conditions and speeds of the surrounding cars was about average. Unfortunately, I was not exactly running with the "pack", I was in-between 2 groups of cars... and sure enough around the next overpass was a cop waiting for me.

From the moment I passed him I knew it was coming, and sure enough he pulled out onto the highway and flipped his lights on. I give him my license and insurance without asking. "Do you know what I pulled you over for" - "No." - "Do you know how fast you were going?" - "No." The officer then proceeds to tell me that I was going 83, and then shows me the readout on his laser. He goes on to inform me that since I am from out of state, that I would have to post bail for the ticket on the spot. He asked if I had a credit card or sufficient cash to cover my bail. "How much is the bail?" - "Right now its coming to $212.60"

$212.60??? $212.60?!?! Where the hell do they get off charging over $200 for a speeding ticket not in a construction zone and not 20+ over the limit? In Illinois this ticket would have been less than $100...

Remind me to stay away from Wisconsin from now on... that is a friggin rediculous ticketing policy. I can't help but think I've been screwed here. So--- my question to all of you is--- do you know how they calculate the fines for speeding in Wisconsin?

I stifled my outrage and handed over the credit card. Ugh... remind me to never go up to Wisconsin again.

Wisconsin does charge that much for tickets... I was on my way up there with a few friends(I wasn't driving), but we got pulled over for speeding and the fine was $280 or something like that. It's insane, don't speed in that state.

A friend recently got a $150 fine for 11 over, so your $212 for 18 over sounds reasonable. Yeah, it sucks. Luckily, all I ever get is warnings.

I think the really rediculous thing here is that you have to pay for the ticket on the spot...this happened to one of my friends. What are you supposed to do if you cannot do this right then and there? The same thing goes for Illinois and it's policy of taking your license on the spot and mailing it back to you after you have paid off the ticket.

I live in southern Wisconsin and yes, the tickets are always super high. I got pulled over for speeding (can't remember how fast) in a 45 and the ticket was $90. I'm not sure exactly how they calculate it though. Also, it is true that they have a policy for anyone out of state that you have to pay the fine right there or you go to jail. It is a bunch of BS. I know a few of the local cops up here, I'll ask them about it and post later.

Tough sh!t, you shoudn't have been speeding 😉

you should stop being a grandma and learn how to drive faster. everyone speeds, get over it.

btw you should've kept going with him chasing you till you crossed the border lol

What? Post bail? Pay on the spot?

That sounds awfully fishy to me. That's pretty whack if they do things that way.

I've been pulled over out of state in LA & OK before and they never tried to pull that crap. They give me a court date and if I don't want to go I can pay the fine through the mail or over the phone.

Of course I would never want to go to Wisconsin anyways.

Wow, the ticket prices have gone way up. I got one a few years ago doing 17 over, and it was $116.90. Sucks to be you. Thanks for adding to the state funding!

Edit:

Where were you paintaballing at? Any good?

"I can't help but think I've been screwed here."

I paid my fair share of tickets. Never once whined about it.

There is a cushion for going over the speed limit a bit, and you know damn well you were outside it. Most people stay close to the posted speed limit, because it's the law. But then, you're special I guess.

That's in line with speeding ticket rates here in Connecticut. You do the crime, you pay the fine. The fines are higher now than they used to be because so many states are having budget problems. You can easily avoid the fine by obeying the speed limit.

And stop whining-I used to live in Wisconsin. Illinois cops were notorious for targeting WI plates. I remember the Milwaukee Journal printing a very damning transcript of Illinois police radio on their front page.

I believe there is some truth to that....I have lived in Wisconsin all my life and we do have high penalties for speeding in this state.

The use the money for repairing the roads unlike in illinois or indiana whose roads are for $hit...

It brings a smile to my face seeing a flatlander get busted 😀

You think speeding is a big ticket...get busted for OWI in this state. 😉

The best place to get busted for speeding is out west...I was going 25 over the limit in Nebraska and got a 25 dollar fine.

Now I know why some people try to run from the police, hell, with fines like that I would floor the accelerator and take my chances.

Your answer is in there... somewhere.

A useful, more condensed version:
http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/motorist/behaviors/speeding/
"Driving faster than the legal speed limit is punishable with fines ranging from $125.90 to $827.00."

But anyway, go back to Illinois. We don't want you here 🙂

Thx for the links Kil.

Yes, I know I was speeding and I know that I shouldn't have been. I expected the general round of flames coming from that direction... but I do think that the fine is a little steep for what I've seen. FWIW, I was in the middle lane and about 2 miles earlier I had been passed on the left by the group that was ahead of me (about 5 cars or so).

I'm not trying to "whine" about it, I knew I was speeding and I knew that if I was caught that I would have to pay the price. I specifically avoided going 20+ over the limit because I know the tickets become rediculously expensive after that point. I was taking the calculated risk, and I got caught. I accept that.

However, I had speculated in my mind that if I were to be caught, I would have to pay ~$100.... and I was floored when the cop dropped that bomb on me.

So, whatever... I mean the cop was sitting about 5 miles over the border just waiting for Illinois plates to come by his trap. They just love those tickets because we have to pay them on the spot and they know damn well that we're not going to show up for the court date. They can have my $200... but I'll be damned if I'm going to spend another $1 on fireworks/powerball/beer/football/cheese/tourism/etc in that state. I used to go up there all the time to visit friends, or go to the Oshkosh airshow, or go to the dells... now they can cram it... well... you know where. Good riddance!

I've got busted in IL, and you don't see me boycotting them because of a stupid ticket. Not only did I have to pay a fine, but I had to miss work for a day to take their stupid driving class to clear it from my record. I'd rather pay the $200 than waste a day learning how not to speed. You just need to realize that you can do +20 in IL, but you need to stay within +15 on the interstate and +10 in the cities.

Well, to tell you the truth I don't really like Wisconsin all that much anyways. The only thing I would miss is the airshow, but I can just go to reno instead and have much more fun. As for everything else, I can get it here or down in Indiana which is just as close. And while I do agree that +18 on the interstate is a little steep, it was a clear sunny day, and traffic was averaging low 80's.

$212 sounds about right, I don't have the book around anymore that used to tell the police what statute, fine, etc. could be given. As far as paying on the spot, I think it is a great idea. The state gets their money without having to go through all kinds of expense to get it... mailings, etc. You planned on paying it anyhow right? So now it is done with.
