is this program suppose to tell you have many system fans you are running?

i am currently on a laptop and have been experiencing overheating problems. i figured it's probably because the fan is broken, so i installed Speed Fan. the program shows 2 fans with 1 spinning and 1 not, so i am wondering if the program actually identifies the number of fans installed. Thanks ahead of time

Huh? CPU-z doesn't show fan speeds.
Can you link a pickey of what you're seeing?

It's hard to say. If there's a fan port on the mb with no fan attached it'll show up as being a dead fan even though nothing is there. SpeedFan isn't a reliable gauge of how many fans are installed.

I don't know, I'm not that familiar with laptops. The 2 that I have opened(Compaq, Dell) only had 1 fan, but that's a very limited sampling group.

Edit:
You brought to mind my old Dell laptop. The heatpipe on the cpu heatsink went bad!?!? I had no idea they could go bad, but when I opened the case and used a temporary heatsink my overheating problems were alleviated. That may be an area you could look into.
