Father pulled over while driving laboring wife to hospital has been ticketed

A father who was pulled over and held at gunpoint has been ticketed for speeding his laboring wife to the hospital

His wife, Rachel, was in labor and thought she wasn’t going to make to the hospital in time to have her baby.

Ben was going 30mph over the speed limit and that caught the attention of police.

Ben listened to his wife and refused to stop when officers tried to pull him over, so police ended up using stop-sticks to blow out the tires on their SUV bringing the couple to a stop on the outskirts of Fort Dodge.

The Kohnens say they were ordered to the ground and held at gunpoint until police realized it was an emergency.

The Calhoun County attorney is issuing two citations: a speeding ticket for going 86 in a 55 miles-per-hour zone and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Ben tells us this could put his CDL license at risk, which he uses for his job.

I'm thinking if he pulls over, he gets an escort to the hospital instead of all this drama.

I hope all those Iowa Republicans enjoy paying for that family now on the Government tit because they feel so much safer prosecuting a new Dad.

What do Republicans have to do with this? The nanny state is a product of left wing socialism.

I'd honestly just pull over. A quick 1 minute explanation should suffice for a reasonable cop. He may even escort you to the hospital. But instead you get a huge long ordeal that ends up just wasting time and putting the wife at risk. I understand his position, but he probably made the wrong move.

cops now have esp. when you are running away from them @ 30+ miles over the speed limit they automatically know its because you or someone in the car is about to have a baby.

It may have been but does the Iowa prosecutor have to make it worse?

Supposedly they called 911 but Dispatcher couldn't understand a word they were saying.

I would like to hear the tape. Also locationing would show them speeding down the highway.

Labor takes literally hours; how were they so caught off guard that speeding to the hospital was the only solution? Also, an emergency situation doesn't magically mean laws no longer apply to you. Want to get to a hospital quickly? Call an ambulance. And anyone who decides not to pull over for the police because his wife said not to? That person is absolutely going to get shot one day, and he's going to deserve it, because apparently his brains were replaced with packing peanuts. What you have here is two mind-numbingly stupid people doing something utterly idiotic that could potentially have gotten them both killed, and you want to turn it into a "boy, cops are bad" discussion? No, I'm pretty sure if I see someone tearing ass down the highway at 85 mph refusing to pull over for the police, that's a situation that I want the cops involved with. If not then, why bother having police at all? Jesus Christ, this thread is so stupid it gave me cancer of the brain.

Last I checked most states will arrest you for going 30 miles over the limit. In some states it's a Class B misdemeanor for going 31mph over the limit and Class A misdemeanor for going 40mph over the limit.

I guess they weren't black people. Otherwise, they might have been shot instead of just the tire strips being laid down.

Doing 86 in a 55 is a great way to make sure your child doesn't get born at all. :colbert:

Guy thought he was a special snowflake under special circumstances. "Woohoo! My wife's going to have a baby. That gives me carte blanche to break every traffic law on the way to the hospital." You can't get much more idiotic than not pulling over.

actually we were told NOT to call an ambulance. Since it takes so long just drive in.when the contractions were like 2 min apart.

that's what did. hell i even stopped a McDonalds on the way! (btw do this. You do not get to eat and it can be a LONG time before the little one is out)

edit: forgot about the orginal article. the parents are fucking stupid. 1st) 85 in a 55? fuck them. then they refused to pull over? fuck them twice.

the fucker is even dumber though since he has a CDL! fuck him

These people have probably seen too many movies and thought it was legit to drive like a freaking maniac and not stop for cops just because your wife is pregnant. Reality is you have a responsibility to get to the hospital on time without breaking laws, driving like an idiot, running from cops or anything else crazy and illegal. A pregnant woman about to go into labor won't be thinking straight but a husband is supposed to remain calm and in control and actually protect her, not endanger her.

Meanwhile, leave it to McOwned to prove he's even dumber than the people in the article.

We were told to call ahead (not for an ambulance, just to verify arrival) based on the 5-1-1 rule; contractions 5 minutes apart, 1 minute in length and have been at that frequency for at least 1 hour. How unprepared do you have to be to get to the "holy shit, speeding down the highway dodging cops" level of birth? Or was that specifically part of the wife's birth plan? "I want a little drama on my big day, so how about an unwitting police escort?"

Also, heightened stress (as you might encounter during, say, a high speed police chase) will cause a release of adrenaline which inhibits oxytocin production and slows, or stops, labor. These idiots weren't just breaking laws, they were actively impeding the birth they were so concerned about.

So he risked killing himself, his wife, their unborn child, and innocent others but we are now supposed to feel sorry for them?
