I always use the CLi version when I can, but I have the Screen Saver on this computer, my fastest cruncher. So I decided to try the CLI to see how big of a difference is makes. When using the screen saver version I usually have email, word, web browser, trillian and lots of other stuff going on. When using the CLI I close everything and let it run overnight.

These are results running the Screen Saver Version with blank screen.
On a Amd Athlon ThunderBird 1GHZ 10 x 100Mhz
All Results are from SetiSpy.

2/7/2002 0.600 8.330
2/7/2002 5.709 7.500

These are results running the CLI with SetiDriver.

Yep, the CLI is quite a lot faster. I just wish there was an option to force the CLI to restrict itself to a maximum of 75% of CPU time (for example)

Actually, I wish that it would respond better to other application requests for CPU cycles, and/or a way to lower the priority of the SETI client. In other words, I wish it worked more like the dnet client, in giving up CPU cycles. Then I believe the issues we've seen with Outlook and other apps would go away.

Well on my setup, it took 16-18 hours for one WU using GUI, now using CLI it takes me 5-6 hours.

I had these issues big time when using SetiDriver. I then started using SetiHide and I no longer have those issues.
Example of issues:
Printing took forever to spool
Outlook took too long to open and if I wanted to go to the rules I had to actually stop the CLI
I have a picture program that hold thumbnails that would not show any with the CLI running

All these are gone now with SetiHide. No hardware changes either. This has been the case with the 3 computer I am using.

MoFunk you have got me thinking :)

I'll have a root around for SetiHide, thanks :) - Outlook was my major issue - I dont mind a few dropped frames in Q3 (just...)

Do you have to uninstall setidriver???
I have seti hide in the same folder and checked in seti driver!

paf007- I don't think so. Although I put mine in a different directory
Migroo- That kinda sucks. There is that halt feature you can try. It is supposed to stop the CLI when a specific app is open and then start back up when you close it. You could try that if you dont leave outlook open all the time. By the way what problem are you having with outlook and what version are you using?

This "halt if open" thing could really come in handy...if only i knew how to use SetiHide!

If someone wants to write something up on how to install and use SetiHide for this page then I'd be welcome :)

Just think....put "taskmgr.exe" in the list of things to halt on, then no more "why is my CPU at 100% usage?" :)

Hi MoFunk :)

Yeah I'm using Win 2000 and Outlook 98. I dont leave Outlook open all the time - its OK, I just close Seti Driver when I want to email... ;)

If I'm reading those results right, of course the CLI will be faster - the CLI was run with the CPU overclocked; the GUI wasn't.

I can't find anything in the manual that speaks of the "halt if open" thing. I'd love to have seti running ALL the time, but it interferes with my Ra3 and WinMx.

Whereever you put the Setihide client there will be a folder called files. Look in there and see if you have a txt file called halt_if_running. if not make one halt_if_running.txt then put the complete path of the app you want the client to halt for. Example c:\office\excel.exe test it and see.

Under the cache section of SetiHide there is an area to import and export. Click the area to add a path and it will bring up another window, point to the folder that all your cache folders are in and click ok. then click import. As long as that is the right path you will get an import window with all the WU's it's going to import. Select import all again at the top of that box and that should be it. I do at times have to copy the user file over to those imported caches. Good luck.

I would like to know what the results are with the same configuration. How about run them both not overclocked, then run them both overclocked?

I think the overclocking had some impact on the speed obviously, but I think the biggest change came from switching from the screen saver to the CLI.
Since I posted this I got my Athlon up to 1210 Mhz, 10 x 121 :D
