Speed test... thoughts

Ran a speed test and the results are:

2005-09-11 11:59:03 EST: 4363 / 356
Your download speed : 4468062 bps, or 4363 kbps.
A 545.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 364737 bps, or 356 kbps.

I ran the test while running AOL in the background w/ AOL Radio playing, and a laptop connected wirelessly also running AOL.

Is this good? What should it be?

Excellent download speeds w/ a mediocre upload. What speed does your ISP advertise on the rate plan that you're currently using?

No idea. Using Brighthouse/Roadrunner through Tampa... I'm located in Sarasota.

Nothing on the bill says what rate I'm paying for.

No complaints either. I'm very content with the service I have. Just wondering what others have.

Sounds like a 4 or 5 mbit download with a 384 upload plan. EDIT: Who is your ISP (internet service provider) and what speed tiers do they offer? You beat me to it.

John is right. Good download speeds =)

BTW: Checked their website, they didn't specify their speeds.

Retested w/ laptop not connected and AOL closed:

2005-09-11 15:48:38 EST: 4186 / 357
Your download speed : 4287295 bps, or 4186 kbps.
A 523.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 366000 bps, or 357 kbps.

and

2005-09-11 15:50:22 EST: 4384 / 358
Your download speed : 4489644 bps, or 4384 kbps.
A 548 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 366655 bps, or 358 kbps

It looks to me like you're getting standard (expected) speeds for a 4 mbps down/384 kbps up cable connection as tweekah mentioned. Unless Roadrunner specifically advertised different speeds for your service, I don't seen anything wrong with your results at all.

For reference (since you asked), my Comcast cable in Salt Lake City, Utah gives me an average of about 4650 down/351 up on the speed tests at broadbandreports.com. The results you get depend a LOT on the actual location of the test server, how busy the routers are between you and the source, the speed of the source itself, etc.

Just for example, in the three tests I just did now do the San Francisco server on broadbandreports.com, I got scores of 4401/348, 5681/352, and 4657/351. If you really want to get a reliable speed test, you need to make sure you know what it happening at the destination, and run the test several times then take an average of the results to get a reasonably accurate 'score'.

Brighthouse Networks (Road runner) in Tampa Bay offers 5Mbit down and ~384 up; testing at the speeds at any of the NDT servers, e.g. miranda.ctd.anl.gov:7123, gives results close to these figures. After the test is completed, read the notes in the bottom of the box. You may be able to get some improvement in the download speeds by doing TCP tweaks (use DrTCP from dslreports.com).
