Speed test on my parents cable modem.... WOW!

Noticed it was going slow but what the hell...

Downstream: 405 kbps
Upstream: 101 kbps


My line up in north florida gets 3x that.... Why the hell would it be so slow?

that is pretty bad. mayb it's the machine? Is something sucking bandwidth? What are they supposed to be getting from the Cable provider?

Cable having difficulties right now maybe? Although when I had cable it tended to either be on at full speed or not on at all

Pretty shoddy. What site are you using to test it? Maybe try "speed test" in google (or "broadband test") and compare a couple other sites.

Im tried using all 3 locations at dslreports.com for the tests.

The computer is a few month old (home built) 1.4ghz athlon 512 ddr.

Its been slow for awhile, but this is insane....

Totally depends on the site you use... try downloading something from ftp.cdrom.com

do your parents live near orlando?? i've heard horror stories about cable down there. i hear the DSL is way better near Orlando than cable.

He has dual OC3's. I have been in his basement. There is more wire in there than there is at the TelCo.

What OS is the computer running? You might get a speedup by tweaking the TCP/IP received buffer/window depending on the OS.

I had the same problem recently. I was getting about the same speeds with my modem. Downloaded the tweaks cmv mentioned, and I was getting 2mb+ down.

What cable co.? My mother up in Western PA has adelphia and running speed tests on it in the evening will get you slower than a 56k modem, most of the time it is about a 33.6k modem. But during the early afternoon it picks back up around 1.2 mbps. Based on what people were saying on dslreports I told her to go in and ask for a reduction in her bill. I don't know in your case if you would have any success in doing the same, it's worth a try, or just have them go dsl.
