Speed test differences?

I've been troubleshooting some internet speed issues on a friend's computer. I'm seeing something I can't explain.

I've used both the built in network adapter and an add-in adapter and I get the same results of about 8Mbps down when testing the internet speed using www.speakeasy.net/speedtest.

But when I hook up my own computer and do the same test, I get 20Mbps down instead of just 8Mpbs down.

What could account for the difference in internet speed?

You may know what you are saying about the conditions but I have no idea of exactly what apple to apple tests you are running. A long list of variables can cause internet speed degradation

The speakeasy net speed tester is a certainly a commonality. But is the difference in the line, the OS, the computer, the modem, the NIC drivers, the internet packet settings, or where is the questions you have to isolate by tests. So its an scientific experimental design question to get a series of experimental tests to try to isolate the cause of the difference. Changing just one variable at a time. And since line noise is always a moving target, you have to do a long average of results.

But agreed, 8 vs. 20 is dramatic.

What type of connection, what hardware is invovrled, what the speed the contract is calling for?

I have used that speed test before, its ok but can be buggy.
The best way to test your download is to download a big file, wait for it to level out, and thats your download speed.
~900kbs download is about what you would get from a 8Mb/s line.
