Speed problems with ABIT Kr7A-Raid and Athlon XP1800

I hope there is somebody out there, that has the above mentioned combination of Motherboard and CPU, that can help me understand if things are/can work correctly.

When the bios loads, it lists the processor as an "Athlon (tm)", NOT "Athlon XP (tm)" as I have seen on screen grabs.
It also lists the speed as 1150 Mhz. When I then enter the settings in the Bios, it lists the speed as 1800 mhz, FSB 133 and multiplier 11.5X. It also here lists the processor without the "XP". I would expect the speed to be 1533 Mhz, but that is not a choice in the CPU speed settings.

I am not trying to overclock, just want the expected performance from the CPU w. standard AMD heatsink/cooler

System: ABIT KR7A-Raid, AMD Athlon XP 1800, 2x512MB DDR, 100gb WD, 27gb Matrox, 64MB Abit Siluro gForce2 MX400, Hercules Fortissimo II sound, DVD and 32x12x40 CD-RW, Pinnacle 1394 card, Windows XP Pro

What bios are you using. You may need to flash an updated bios.

maybe the bios is listing the pr rating
11.5*133=1.53ghz=1800+
type dxdiag in the run command in windows and see what is it running at in windows

Xdiag says 1154 Mhz (and again omits the XP in the processor description.)

I'm using AWARD Modular bios V6.00PG that came w. the board. I checked for bios updates at Abit's site, and all the updates (supposedly) are dealing with relates to the raid.

I am starting to suspect an error in the processor although AMD support points to the motherboard manufacturer. What really bugs me is that it doesn't even recognize the correct CPU type. which I imagine could impact default settings in the bios.

I also dowloaded AMD's CP check tool, which also sees the processor running at 1154 Mhz and doesn't find the "XP" either.

Update to the 6N bios, it dosen't matter if it's raid or non raid. The bios won't install the raid drivers in bios if it is a non raid board.

Did the upgrade with no apperent difference. (except a CMOS error). After playing with the Bios for a while, I noticed the CPU FSB was listed differently on the page with DRAM seetings and on the main page. Loading safe defaults and booting didn't change anything except speed now was 1500Mhz at 10x multiplying. Loading the optimized defaults changed the listed speed to 1800+ which is where I was before flashing the Bios. next reboot didn't change that, but one more reboot suddenly worked. Now it recognize my XP 1800 and everything is perfect.

(The Abit manual recommends several reboots for some reason. Now I know why)

i have the same sort of problem with the kr7a-raid!

but my xp1800+ post as "athlon 750" at boot up!!! maybe 11,5*66

after set the BIOS to 1800+ the system won't boot!

i must make a CMOS-Reset to boot again! but the system post again "athlon 750"

i contacted abit over here in europe! but till now there is no answer!


when at the end of the week there is no solution for this problem i will return my kr7a-raid and the xp1800+!!!

maybe i will try a shuttle ak35gtr!!!

Try turning the computer on while holding "Insert" down". It may take 3-4 attempts, but this will make it boot with default settings.
Then I suggest you download ind install the new bios from http://fae.abit.com.tw and load optimized defaults. That did the trick for me.

I have Kr7A/R with 6g BIOS.

CPU recognition is lousy. From comments I've read, the 6N BIOS is no better at CPU recognition. Your 'Multiplier Factor' is probably incorrectly set by BIOS. My 1600+ was set to multiplier of 10 (should be 10.5) by BIOS.

Recommend you set 'CPU Operating Speed' to 'User Define' and 'Multiplier Factor' to correct multiplier for your cpu. Then set 'CPU FSB Clock' to whatever you wish.

i've tried a thunderbird 1333c without any probs!!!

but when i switch over to my athlon xp1800+ the same sh**t happens!!! "athlon 750"

do you've the chance to test with a thunderbird?
