Speed of a DVD drive. What the difference (fast/slower)?

Call me dumb! Flame me whatever! But I've never owned a dvd drive, so I've got some questions.

I'm planning to get a DVD drive mainly for watching DVDs!! woo! So I don't really see the difference between a 16x and a 6x when it comes to this. When I watch a DVD would it skip on a 6x?

And what are the reason for getting a 16x over a 6x?

(If you say the 16x would read normal cd faster I've got a 52x cdrom already)

this is the conclusion i came up with, i used to think the same thing: dvd's aren't just movies. there are some data dvds i guess. one coming to mind is wing commander 4 (was re-released when dvd drives first came out, put 7 cds on one dvd). i assume in this case that a faster dvd drive could install the game faster and have faster load times than a slower dvd drive. like there is a cd-rom mode and a dvd-rom mode. that sound right?

1x is all the dvdrom needs to play movie...where the higher speed comes is future dvd-rom games and ripping dvd info off of disk to harddrive.

my 8x dvd reader is also a 32x cd reader though many dvd-roms grossly exaggerate their reading speed and don't reach it...


I think the 16x I have seen are 40x cd readers which I highly doubt it does much over 30x...your 52x cd-rom is worth keeping for general everyday use...

S'far as I know , "1x" DVD is the speed normal set-top players use, and "1x" DVDROM is about equal to "10x" CDROM speed.

That is what my original pioneer 110a was 1x dvd 10x cd, but now it seems to be closer to a 1 to 4 ratio of dvd to cd reading

creative had 5x dvd 32x cd then they went to 6x dvd 24x cd...mine is 8x dvd 32x cd...seen a bunch of brands that are 10x dvd 40x cd...
