So a friend gave me two sticks of ddr3-2400(2x 8mb). I currently have 8 meg of ddr3-1866. can I run all of it or pull the slower out and use 16 meg of the faster memory. advantages or disadvantages of doing this?

He gave you 4 MB of RAM? Wow, you probably can open two Word documents at once. ;)

But just on the off chance he gave you 16 GB, if you run all the sticks at once, they will all run at the lowest speed (in your case, 1866). You'd probably just be better off using the 2 X 8 GB kit. Plus, sometimes mixing different RAM can cause weird, hard to determine errors if they don't decide to play nice.

I wish I had friends who gave me 16 GB of RAM. :mask:

Advantage: More memory.
Disadvantage: Possible it don't play nice with the other sticks, and all RAM will run at the slower speed.

You got nothing really to lose by using them, I would just run memtest86+ overnight, and see if it shows any errors.
I would not boot into any OS before testing the RAM, since corrupted files aren't very fun to deal with.
