Speed Limits exist only for municipal revenue

Seems pretty much a given anywhere. Just trying to churn out more money.

Same thing with all the cameras, total bs they are to make it "safer". They installed redlight cameras around here a couple years ago. Got popped by one cause they set the yellow on right turn signals to like 1.5 seconds. You could see on the video the other yellow lights at the intersection for cross traffic were still yellow while mine had already gone red. I tried to fight it by mail, just said guilty.

I'd love to see the bogus shit cops and lawmakers would come up with if every person obeyed the speed limit and all road rules for a couple weeks.

My friend got a ticket for going 80mph in a 65.....at 1 AM.....ridiculous

Hes vietnamese and has an accent and he said the cop was a douche the whole time, even joked if he could read the speed limit sign or not. I told him to report the guys ass but I dont know if he did or not.

I do notice that younger people with nice cars get pulled over a lot more for stupid shit than people in your normal run of the mill stuff.

Man i got one on the 60 fwy in November going 75mph at 6:30am on a Saturday in my company truck. Cop was being an ass, looked like he had a new guy with him so he was trying to act all hard.

I was coming home from getting called out to work at like 3am and was tired as hell, forgot the CHP does their little bullshit speed stings there Saturday mornings, have seen at least 6 people pulled over in a 1 mile stretch between the 605 and Seventh St on the 60 fwy. Talk about trying to generate revenue.

Why is that ridiculous? If you get tagged going 10+ on any road at any time, the expectation should be that you're getting a ticket, not the other way around.

Of course they are.

Such an egregious lie and so fvcking easily proven as such, too. Find me a single red light program that takes any extra revenue above operating costs and spends every nickel of it on actual programs to make the roads safer. If you find one, that one really is for safety. All the others make extra revenue and send it elsewhere.

Why does everyone act like this is big news? Of course this is true. Why would it be any different? This is how a lot of small and medium size counties/cities/towns make their money so that they can provide services to their citizens. What's wrong with that?

Now if they are intentially laying down speed traps or fiddling with red light cameras and short yellows, that is different. But just enforcing normal speed limits is perfectly fine with me.

Maybe it's because young people with nice cars are typically doing more stupid shit than normal people...

You're saying ridiculous to get a ticket when you're going over the limit by 15 mph? Or are you saying that speed limits shouldn't apply after midnight?

But municipalities DO shorten yellow lights in intersections with red-light cameras. Heck, sometimes it is in their service agreement with companies that deploy these cameras - which BTW these companies get a cut of the revenues.

You want to post a link to that info??? I find that just a little hard to believe.

That's why it's your God given duty to prevent them from collecting any revenue from you.

Escort 9500ix + a good laser jammer. Best money a "speeder" will ever spend, and much cheaper than a ticket in the long run.

Wow.. people are not reading the article AT ALL.

The Speed limits in many cases themselves MEAN JACK SHIT because they are, as admitted by the Detroit municipal cops and governments, ARE FUCKING ARBITRARY.

Hey, you're WHITE, let's "tax" you for drinking.

Hey, you have BROWN HAIR, let's "tax" you for walking around.

Hey, you're going over 40 MPH, let's "tax" you for DRIVING.

This is what ARBITRARY means. It is MALICIOUS because it is designed to MAKE MONEY to PAY FOR GOVERNMENT JOBs and government is NOT DESIGNED TO BE PROVIDING FREE AND ARBITRARY JOBS TO FUCKERS (AKA many COPS).

Thank you. /Steps off podium.

Damn they must have updated this page. When I got mine there was apparently no set limit on left or right yellow light intervals. They could basically set them at whatever they want, which is why I got mine. I saw the light go yellow, and there was no time to stop safely as I was only a few feet from the line, it almost instantly went from yellow to red.

Page has been updated with this:

The minimum yellow for a left or right turn is 3.0 seconds, regardless of the speed limit.

Cities recently found to have too-short yellows:

San Bernardino, Nov. 2008,
Redlands, Sept. 2009.

Those are my neighboring cities when I lived in Riverside.

Wow, you're not reading the posts AT ALL. His post was in response to two different people both complaining about getting nailed for going 15 over the speed limit.

Speedlimits are the law. Your argument that they are arbitrary is meaningless. Whether they put a 5 mph speedlimit on a freeway or a 70 mph on a residental street, you still need to follow the law.

If a community feels that any particular speed limit is wrong, they have the ability to get it changed.

The occasions where I've been driving and said "man, this 45 should be a 70" are pretty few and far between. Generally speaking, even in "Detroit", the speed limits are pretty sane on most roads. Unless of course you think you're an F1 driver. Vroom Vroom.

Blacks sitting on the bus, jews being incinerated, and alcohol being banned were also onces 'laws'.

The law is ultimately what we the people say it is, if prohibition is any indication.

Yeah, they were saying on the radio here the other day that the latest effort by the city cops here to "enforce traffic safety" had pretty much resulted in over 1100 speeding tickets in less than 2 months, in a city of just over 100,000 people.

I do have to say that the city cops here aren't too bad, though. They tend to enforce the limit on the central freeway running through town (60mph), and in school zones during times when the kids are going to/from school (definitely a good time to enforce the limit).

WHAAAAAAA !

I can't fucking speed whenever the fuck I want to WHAAAAAAA !

Trust me, none of you complainers would appreciate it if there were no traffic laws and it was just mahem on the roadways. I sure as hell know I wouldn't.

Wow.. people are not reading the article AT ALL.

And you failed to read what I was commenting about.

I was responding to a guy that was complaining about getting a ticket for going 80 in a 65, not about the article. Places that have 80 mph limits are VERY few and far between, as far as I know the only place in the US that has a limit that high is a few counties in Texas.

I remember reading that Utah had upped the limit to 80mph. They did not see any increase in the number of accidents, and hardly any increase in people's actual driving speed. It was determined that people tend to know their limits, and drive what they feel is safe.

Houston lowered its speed limit to 65 years back to lower "smog emissions". I bet my i4 Honda has lower emissions at 100mph then the average 80's Chevy has at 50mph. If the speed limit is related to emissions, then every car should be given a max speed limit based on its emissions test. If you are going to let that 82 beater drive 65mph and leave me gasping for air if I happen to be behind it, then I should be able to drive fast enough to produce those same emissions in my SLEV.

Yes. Are you saying they should?

Because the government is more important than reality?
