I have always wondered this. When you can see the speed limit sign are you allowed to be going that speed or does the sign signify where the change takes place(if there is a change).Like, every time I go from say a 45 mph zone into a 55 mph zone when am I allowed to be going 55? when I see the sign or after I pass it? Anybody know?

Speed limit ? None here, at least no general. I'd say from the point where the sign is you're allowed to go the shown speed.

At least in PA it is from the point that the new speed limit sign is clearly visible.

I always thought once you reached the sign since it is arguable who has better eyesight and can see the sign at different points...speed limit is just a recommendation anyway. :) I drive at a speed I feel comfortable at.

I'm betting the sign draws the line.

We have a zone here that goes from 50 down to 25 immediately (town borders and such). Nice speed trap, but you can pretty much see the 50mph speed limit sign all the way through the 25mph zone, but if you go 50 you'll soon get pulled over. I always treat it like the sign is the line

It must be sign - because I'm sure there are areas that have a 50 zone, then while you're in it you see a sign for 25 and then for 50 afterwards at the same time.

When the speed is increasing it is when you can see the sign, when decreasing when you can no longer see the sign in rear view mirror. :) Seriously, I have often wondered this myself actually.....

In North Carolina, it is from the point of the sign.

Be aware that young, eager policemen sometimes have....issues with exactly where those signs are placed. It's in your wallet's best interest to slow down prior to arriving at the sign.

As policy, we always ran radar looking "into" the slower speed zone, rather than "out of" the speed zone. i.e., I was watching for people speeding up from a 35 to a 55 for example, as opposed to looking for people coming into the 35 zone from the 55 zone. Of course, if they went past me still proceeding in an egregious fashion, they generally got my autograph.

Thanks for all the info guys. Though it's not a sure thing the safe this is to consider the sign a line.

Here it usually says:

80
KPH
BEGINS

so its the moment you pass that sign, I think.

in texas its when you pass the sign. theres so many little towns here that drop the limit from 70 to 45 or so, and you can see the sign on the other side, but if you go 70 you'll probably get pulled over.

Also in NC, we usually have warning signs to tell you the speed limit is about to decrease. The assumption is you see those and have slowed down to what the new, lower limit is by the time you reach the actual sign.

here in aus as far as i know, you are meant to wait untill you actually reach the sign before speeding up, and when coming into a slower zone you should be down to the speed indicated by the time you pass the sign. but everyone tends to slowly creep up to the higher speed when they are still about 50 or so metres back.
