CNN
WASHINGTON -- More deaths are occurring on the nation's highways because car manufacturers are putting more horsepower under the hood of cars and drivers are using the muscle to go faster than ever, according to a new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Doesn't everybody NEED a Hemi-powered Ram, F-150 Lightning, or a Silverado SS? I have feeling the Nissan Titan is a powerful battering ram as well.

The article talks about driving too fast, not your issues with pick up trucks and SUVs

Speed doesn't kill........it's the impact that kills.........

Yet another liberal bashing freedom of choice thread. I know BBD, the general public is too stupid to be trusted with horsepower, everyone should be driving a dull and anemic Honda.

7% of road deaths are caused by going above the speed limit in the UK (according to some institues research that they quoted on Top Gear).
Hence why (in the UK), 5,000 speed cameras haven't helped reduce the number of road deaths.

Speed doesn't kill people, bad drivers and stupid people kill people (or themselves).

BJC:

I wouldn't ride a bike on the public streets. The same kind of guys who post here drive on those streets. :) j/k

Wear a helmet, and learn the laws pertaining to bicycles. In most states bikes have the same rights and obligations as motorists, except they can't drive 40 mph over the speed limit.

Yes, I'd take away quite a few drivers licenses if I were King.

If the maximum speed limit is 70 mph why don't our folks in Congress pass a law that regulates speed. On the highway some little gizmo allows autos to go up to 70 mph and off the highway the same little gizmo allows auto to go up to 50 mph and in residential areas it would be 30 mph.. Some kind of electronic gps type thing that knows where you are and has control over the speed the vehicle goes. This would do a few things.. among which is; we'd be able to better design auto safety if we had a maximum speed parameter, I think. Also the reduced speed on highways would save lives and reduce accidents. Also include a drunk indicator that won't allow a car to start if the person is drunk or driving erratically and it slows the car down sets off the warning lights and pulls to the side of the road.. nifty car, that!

What kind of vehicle do you drive, Corn? I'm curious...

I didn't read anything about liberals in that article, did you even read the article? It's scary how any opinion you might have on a subject is dictated by whether or not the orginator of the subject is a liberal. If a conservative started this thread would you have praised them?

Stupidity kills

But, sadly, not often enough does it kill the source of that stupidity.

Nice ride. :) Just wondering.

I thought before the gov't raised the speed limits on our highways/freeways, there were reports that speed DIDN'T kill. Hence our max speeds on CA Interstate 5 went up to 70mph and on local SoCal freeways they went to 65. Of course drivers tend to push that and my experience is that everyone bumps it up around 10mph.

I think the REAL killer is disparity in speed. Fast and slow cars mixing it up on the same road.

Only if they would have rightly chastized Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for yet another bogus study that always comes to the same conclusion.

Notice this "study" doesn't encompass the entire country.......wonder why that is.....

Did this study compare miles driven/fatality before and after the 75mph increase, or was it simply "more have died since....."?

The New Zealand researchers studied death rates on rural intestates where the speed limits had been increased from 55 mph to 75 mph. Of those, the study finds a 38 percent increase, or about 780 more deaths.

I think the answer to my question is answered right there. They've come to the conclusion that it was simply the increase in the speed limit that has contributed to the increase in death, no mention of the increase in miles driven before and after. Imagine that, I would have thought that a "broad" study would footnote that interesting fact somewhere.

Go-carts are a new addition to the road (25 years maybe), unfortunatly for them you can't change the mass of a truck or SUV and maintian it's utility. Sorry. Buy a deville or q45 if you're worried they still have a bit a mass left in them.

You're joking right? ( ihope) I never imagined you to be an authortarian liberal. While your at it lets puy video cameras in homes and cars, monitored by the feds for any subversion or wrong-doing. Make every home owner hire a licenced life-gaurd of they own a pool. Make bars test thier patrons before each drink so thier not drunk in public....etc etc etc?

This is a free country..or used to be.

Are you nuts?

Why? Because I'm somewhat tired of the car that's been my daily driver for 4 years? I've got 70,000 miles on the Audi, 68,000 of which included an APR chip upping boost by 1 bar. It's running stronger than ever, which means its a perfect time to sell. Besides, I want something larger than my S4, yet still has that stealthy good looking quality--although the color I ordered isn't too stealthy.
