I just recently switched from cable TV to AT&T U-Verse IPTV. My PC is connected to the supplied gateway (RG) over Cat5 and my Playstation3 (PS3) is connected over the wireless signal. I just set things up so that I can share media files on my PC to the PS3. This is great since I have all my music on my PC and can now listen to it in the living room.
My question is what kind of speed differences could I expect for sharing media using wired connections? What would be the difference with connecting the PS3 straight to the RG using Cat5? What about using a gigabit network switch (both the PC and PS3 have gigabit ethernet), since the RG they gave me is limited to 10/100?
I know that the obvious answer is to try them out and see for myself, but I don't own a gigabit switch. Also, I don't know of a way to test the speed that I am getting from the PC to the PS3. What I'm looking for is a general idea of what to expect and also for any methods for testing the speed.
