in those speed checkout lanes where you can go if you have 15 items or less, what counts as an item?

if i bought 15 candy bars, does that count as 15 items or just 1 item?

i agree with it being 15 items though i just saw a Hungry Man commerical on A&E and the guy was checking out alot of those dinners. then he claimed it off as 1 item in a 5 items or less lane

count it as the number of scans

15 apples in a bag = 1 item
5 loose rolls of paper towel = 5 items
pack of 12 paper towel = 1 item

I was a cashier in those lanes a few years back and was told that if someone rolled up with more than 15 items, I just had to roll with it. I asked the manager whether that defeated the purpose and he said, "Pretty much but the customer is always right". Morons used to come with 50 or more items (usually foreigners).

16 isn't so bad and most cashiers wouldn't even notice such things so probably shens, but I'm talking about people with 30 and more items. It's rude to the other customers that have only a couple of items. Most managers don't give a fvck when a customer complains, trust me.

We had a 10 or fewer lane - I seem to recall a few customers in the high 20, maybe 30-item range. It also happened at the service desk - people came up with a cart of groceries and want to checkout there, since lines are long - but they don't seem to get that we have no room at the desk - just the scale/scanner..not really anywhere to put groceries so someone else could bag them (if we even had another person available for that)...it gets old (and takes a while) to scan/bag 20-30 items individually. It also makes everybody behind you wait much longer than they should have to.

think about it, scan 1 candy bar, type in x 15

1 item

Think about it - not all candy bars are the same. My store used computerized inventory, and they preferred us to scan each different item individually, even if the price was the same.

I was a cashier at walmart one summer and it sucked getting stuck on the express lane.

it was a "5 Items or less".

These are the rules that I adopted:

- If there was one candy bar 10 times, that is 1 item, you can just do x10
- if people were slightly over, (probably up to 15-20 items) and it was not busy in the store, I would just remind them that this was an express line, but I dont mind taking them.
- If it was busy, I would let them know that this is an express line as soon as I see them. If they didnt budge, most dont. I tell them how its not fair to the people behind them, saying it loud enough, so they get dirty looks. I say something like "I get paid to scan 5 items or less, or 50 items it doesnt matter to me, but, its unfair to the people behind you with 2 items to wait for you because you dont want to follow the signs"

Who is so busy that they can't wait an extra minute and get in the right lane?
