I probably have to get an alignment done, because I'm not about to mess up my new tires with toe out. I went over a parking lot speed bump too fast, because I COULDN'T SEE IT. Why do business insist on using STEEP speed bumps? And it's even worse when they are unpainted. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the purpose of speed bumps to discourage speeding? Shallow bumps do that just fine, yet these businesses insist on using these little, steep ones that PUNISH you for going too fast, OR EVEN GOING A MODERATE SPEED, by fuxoring up your alignment. Why isn't there a public outcry?

Why don't you try SLOWING DOWN. Use common sense when driving through parking lots. They shouldn't need to even put speed bumps in, but it's jerks like you that are the reason for them in the first place. Go cry to someone who might care.

First, you were going way too fast if it messed up your car.

Second, how could you not see a speed bump? They're at least 10 feet long.

Slow down in parking lots and pay better attention.

First of all, I was going 10mph, 15 max. Second, it was a part of the parking lot that was just a strip of pavement behind a building, with no businesses opening onto it or anything. The problem is that the speed bump was basically a semicircle. Why should I have to slow to 2mph just so I don't fvck up my alignment?

Edit: I don't know that it messed up my car. Car doesn't pull, but I'm pretty sure that messed up the toe because of the sharpness, and how it felt.

I hate speed bumps, although I can certainly see the need for them. That hasn't stopped a few jackasses from speeding through my apartment complex parking lot, though. One of these days, those assholes are going to hit a kid playing in the parking lot.... :|

The reason for the little steep ones is cost. There's a lot more material in a nice gradual bump.

I hate the little ones too...

BTW: If they're not painted, at least in Cali, you can sue the property owner for damages.

Some cars are about 4.5" of ground clearance from the factory...a lot of speed bumps I think are created to mess up cars either by the lot or the installer being a$$holes.

I have read stories of people pissed off and blowing them up with a stick of dynamite or pouring solvents on the asphalt ruining it.

lol, well if u see one in time, angle the car slightly,so the same tires on an axle do not hit at the same time.

this will help,alot.

Dodge Viper?

I'm not sure how much clearance my car has (pic), but I don't have any problems with speed bumps..

Off the top of my head, the Triumph TR7 and TR8 had only 3.5inches, the Spitfire, some Corvettes and a couple others 4.0inchs, camaros and some porsches are in the 4.5" category

There are many speed bumps around here/parking lot entrances that cause even sedans to scrape.

10mph is already way too fast for a parking lot, dude.

Damn, my Porsche comes in at a whopping 4.7" of clearance. I guess I better head to the garage and start lowering it...;)

Maybe if there is pedestrian traffic or if you are driving through parking lanes with traffic, but, if it's an empty area w/ no cars or people as he described, 10MPH is not too fast. Sheesh.

That said, I doubt the speedbump caused damage at 10-15MPH to your alignment. But if it wasn't painted and you think it did, get the mechanic to write it down as the cause, take a pic, and have a lawyer send the property owner a letter. At the very least, maybe they'll paint it reflective yellow like 99.9% of places do.

Hrm, my apartment complex has a sign that says speed limit 10mph in the parking lot. So do a lot of others. I dont think any parking lot would have a sign saying 5mph, that is ridiculously slow.

In some areas there is/was.

Ft. Lauderdale area used to have tons of speed bumps in every subdivision. 15-20 years ago they were made illegal county-wide due to all the damage they cause to emergency vehicles, and all the speed bumps had to be flattened.

Greenleaf resort has speed limit 3 in Altamonte Springs. Not just the parking lot... the entire resort, all the roads around the golf courses, etc.

I agree though... 15 is reasonable in a parking lot.
