Speed/Baud/Bandwidth/Capacity?

If your network is running slow, and its because of somebody downloading large files off the internet, what is the issue? And how would you go about correcting it? Could you block ports or anything? (any shareware programs that would be appropriate?)

Any help is good. My brain is fried this morning and I've got to write a memo about this.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Do you know what their downloading from (ie: kazaa, bittorrent, IRC, etc)? That would be a starting point. I'm assuming that you're the admin on the network or in a supervisory position, correct?

You can block the ports used by the programs to connect, but you'll need to know what program they're using first. Bittorrent uses 6880-6889 IIRC correctly. I'm not sure about the others, but it should be easy to look up the ports in use.

If you really want to put your foot down, warn them once, then take their network cable the next time they break your rules.
