Do you? I've been a skeptic of that claim from day one, and have argued that point in another thread about AMD maximizing clocks with XFR and PBO.

Besides, gaming performance is not all about clocks and cache sizes, otherwise the i9 99xx chips overclocked to 4.5GHz and beyond would be the gaming kings at present and they're not.

Edit: i9 99xx: I mean Intel's HEDT offerings like the i9 9980XE with it 24.75MB cache

It's been discussed already in this thread in the last few pages (A320 derails notwithstanding). So what's your take on it?

It'll assume heat is the primary barrier to 5GHz. It'll certainly help the 6core and 12core chips, if that's the case (larger heat-dissipation die surface, relative to number of cores), plus, the chance to disable a 'worse' core or two in the 5GHz quest.

Seems like a nonsensical rumor. Why not introduce 16 cores at computex and make that announcement EVEN BIGGER, have everyone minds blown away, yet wait only 2 weeks to announce it at E3. Doesn't make any sense.

I think the earliest we are going to see 16 cores is Q4 2019 IF AMD feels pressure by some new as of new unannounced Intel CPU. (which is highly unlikely)

Yup.

I'm wondering if the 3600 could overtake the 2700x with enough of an all core OC. It certainly will on SIMD workloads due to the wider execution hardware, but it also could on general tasks due to the +15% higher IPC and not having that ~4.3GHz clock wall anymore.

Exactly. Heat and binning. Smart money is on the best 8c chiplets going to Threadripper and EPYC.

For "enthusiast" performance parts, I really doubt that AMD would do that. If they do, they're stupid. One of the biggest pieces of Ryzen's success story, has been the enthusiast DIY crowd, and AMD's support of such ("all AM4 CPUs will be unlocked"), and not some big OEM business deskop buyers. (No iGPU in the "bigger" Ryzen CPUs is one good reason.)

It would be a real "kick in the teeth", if those really high performance parts were OEM-only. Can you imagine if ThreadRipper were only available from boutique OEMs, and not directly DIY retail? Then again, I don't know AMD's "return rates", for those higher-end CPUs. Maybe many a n00b builder attempted to build a rig around a $699 CPU, couldn't get it working, and returned everything, and AMD had to eat the cost (even partially) of the expensive TR4 CPU?

Maybe the VRM and cooling requirements are such that the 3950X should only be attempted to be system-integrated by "experts"? Granted, we do have plenty of those on this forum, myself hopefully-included. (Though I have yet to build a custom water loop system. Y'all that have, are ahead of me still.)

That doesn't hold water for me, why limit your best product to OEM's? Plus OEM's are generally sort of mid of the range systems, yeah we have ultra top end ones, but I'd say the large majority of people who would buy a say $1500 OEM build, actually build their own computers, so it wouldn't make sense.

We know the 16 cores CPU exists, but the question is when will AMD introduce it and I think they will only do so IF feeling pressure from Intel, which as of now it doesn't look likely, unless they magically have some unannounced CPU that beats even their all core 5GHz upcoming cpu.

Intel is coming out swinging over at E3, 2019. During the company’s ‘gaming performance for the real world’ event in LA, Intel challenged AMD and its upcoming Ryzen 3000 processors to “come beat us in real world gaming.”

I love how we have the two of them battling each other again. Better choices for all of us.
I still feel Intel is going to come out with some core 2 duo type action next year.

Intel is in knee jerk reaction mode. They are challenging AMD's vastly superior multi core desktop chip (12C) to a "showdown" versus their factory overclocked 8C (9900KFC) chip. I'd like for AMD to accept the challenge and use the XFR/PBO on their 3900X or even 3950X. Let's see how Skylake+ IPC from Zen2 coupled with 1.5-2x more cores, 4.5+Ghz clocks and high speed DDR4 support does Vs 9900KFC

Don't forget Ryzen 3000 will support higher clocked DDR4 so mem. BW will be a lot higher if you can afford it.

No however it would be funny if intel showed up with some sort of super gold standard cpu, that was delided and had a $6k liquid nitrogen cooling system with 5 phantex 1200 watt power supplies all daisy chained together.
